Gay saunas in Athens: the honest summary

Athens has three men's saunas, and they are three very different places. Alexander is the big one, open until 06:00 on Friday and Saturday nights at the edge of Gazi; Flex is the mid-sized one a few streets from Monastiraki metro, with a roof garden in summer and Bear Days twice a week; and Ira Baths is a small, old-fashioned daytime bathhouse near Omonia that closes at 18:00. All three are men-only, towel-only venues with cabins and a darkroom. If you searched for gay sauna Athens, Alexander sauna Athens, Flex sauna Athens or, in Greek, γκέι σάουνα Αθήνα, this is the page: every address, price and opening time below was re-checked in November 2026, and we tell you where the sources disagree. None of the three has a Google rating above about 4.1, so expect character and a busy weekend crowd rather than spa polish.

Legal in one line: saunas are legal private venues for adults in Greece, where sex between men has been legal since 1951 and same-sex marriage since February 2024. There is nothing to hide and nothing to fear from the police in a licensed sauna.

The verified saunas (γκέι σάουνα Αθήνα)

Alexander Sauna Men's Club, Gazi / Metaxourgeio

Alexander · Megalou Alexandrou 134, on the corner of Iera Odos, 104 35. The largest and best-known gay sauna in Athens, open since 2007 on three floors (one listing counts four) about five minutes on foot from Kerameikos metro and ten from the Gazi bars. Inside: a bar, a leather bar, a darkroom, a steam labyrinth or maze, a dry sauna, a steam room, a jacuzzi, a sling room, private cabins, a small garden and a shop selling underwear and fetish brands. Free condoms and lube are provided, and so are towels and slippers. Its founder told Athens Voice back in 2010 that he wanted a place that mixed cruising with a night out, and that is still what it feels like: more club than spa after midnight.

    • Hours: Sunday to Thursday 17:00 to 02:00; Friday and Saturday 17:00 to 06:00. The Globetrotter Guys (updated 27 October 2026) and the official alexandersauna.com agree on these. One old listing says closed Mondays; it is wrong as of 2026, but if Monday is your only night, phone first.
    • Price: €18 general entry, €11 if you are under 30 (Globetrotter Guys, October 2026). The Gay Passport still shows €17 and multi-visit packages such as two entries for €27, so expect a euro or two of drift. Mondays have long been a "partner day" with a reduced rate for couples; ask at the door whether it still runs.
    • When it's busy: Friday and Saturday from about midnight until 04:00, and a second wave early on Sunday evening from about 17:00 to 21:00. Weeknights before 22:00 can be very quiet.
    • Who goes: a broad mix, 25 to 60, locals and tourists, with a visible leather and fetish contingent on weekend nights. All body types are welcome; it is not a muscle-only room.
    • Reviews: spacious, reasonably clean, friendly bar staff. The recurring complaints are cabin doors that do not lock well, lube that runs out in the cabins, and the jacuzzi and showers not always being at their best. One 2026 reviewer complained about being charged full price for a short stay, so ask how long your entry covers.
    • Staying over: three men-only flats upstairs, listed as Alexander Apartments, include free unlimited sauna entry for guests. Useful if the sauna is the point of the trip.

    Flex Sauna, Monastiraki

Flex · Polykleitou 6, 105 51, a short walk from Monastiraki metro. Flex opened during the 2004 Olympics on a quiet side street between Monastiraki and Omonia and bills itself, like Alexander, as "the number one gay sauna in Athens". It spreads over four floors and about 600 square metres: a steam room listed for 40 men, a dry sauna for 15, a jacuzzi, a solarium, a TV lounge, a darkroom and play zone, private cabins, a smoking area and a roof garden that opens in the warm months. Towels and slippers are included. The "Gym" in its old name refers to a small weights area that reviewers rarely mention; do not come for a workout.

    • Hours: 15:00 to midnight, closed Tuesdays. Several listings (Nighttours, Gay Passport) show it open daily; the venue's own information and the Globetrotter Guys say Tuesday is the closing day, so we go with Tuesday closed. One guide mentions a later closing time on some nights, which we could not confirm. Phone +30 210 321 0539 if you are planning around it.
    • Price: €17 (Globetrotter Guys, October 2026; a recent Google reviewer paid the same). Under-30s pay less, and an older listing gives €10 for under-30s on Mondays.
    • When it's busy: afternoons and early evenings. Nomadic Boys puts the peak at 16:00 to 21:00, and because it closes at midnight there is no late-night surge like Alexander's. Sundays and Wednesdays are Bear Days; the Gay Passport also lists nights aimed at younger men and the "macho crowd".
    • Who goes: more locals than Alexander, a wider age range, and plenty of bears on the themed days. Tourists staying around Monastiraki and Psyrri drop in before dinner.
    • Reviews: mixed, 3.9 on Google from roughly 280 reviews. Praise goes to the size, the roof in summer and the staff. Complaints are about a steam room and jacuzzi that are sometimes not hot enough, and cleanliness that varies by day.

    Ira Baths (Hera), Omonia

Ira Baths · Zinonos 4, in the arcade, 104 31, two minutes from Omonia Square. The oldest surviving gay bathhouse in Athens, in a basement off an arcade, and the odd one out on this page: it is a daytime place. Inside there is a small dry sauna, two playrooms, a darkroom, private cabins and showers. The hammam and jacuzzi that older guides mention are no longer in use. It is small, dated and smoky, and that is exactly why its regulars like it.

    • Hours: about 10:00 to 18:00. The Globetrotter Guys say daily; the Gay Passport closes it on Monday and Tuesday; Google shows Tuesday closed. There is no website, so phone first on +30 210 523 4964.
    • Price: not published anywhere we could find, and a 2026 reviewer could not find one either. Expect it to be cheaper than the other two; bring cash.
    • Who goes: a mostly older, local, working-class crowd. Not the place for a party, good for a quiet afternoon.
    • Reviews: 4.1 on Google from about 120. The staff get consistent praise. The complaints are the smell of cigarette smoke, poor ventilation and, in one July 2026 review, mould in the showers.

    Gone but still Googled

Sauna Odeon on Pireos and a "Sauna Alexander" at Agatharchou 42 turn up in old aggregator listings. We found no trace of Odeon in any source from the last decade, and Alexander's only address is Megalou Alexandrou 134. Lamda, often listed as a sauna, was a cruise bar; Nomadic Boys reported it closed in April 2024. Attraxx and 8Downtown are cruise clubs with video rooms, not saunas; both are covered in our Athens cruising guide. If you find a sauna in Athens that is not on this page, it is almost certainly a straight spa or a closed listing.

    When to go

    • For a crowd: Alexander on Friday or Saturday after midnight, or Sunday from 17:00. Flex on Sunday afternoon (Bear Day) or any weekday between 17:00 and 21:00.
    • For quiet: Ira Baths on a weekday morning, or Alexander before 21:00 on a Tuesday or Wednesday.
    • Around Athens Pride: Athens Pride fills Syntagma each June (2027 dates not announced yet). Both Alexander and Flex have their busiest weekend of the year then; check Alexander's site in the week before for extended hours.
    • Summer: July and August are hot and the city empties at weekends as Athenians head to the islands. Flex's roof garden is at its best; Alexander's garden is the place to cool down. In the afternoon heat many locals go to Limanakia instead and hit the saunas after sunset.
    • Public holidays: Greek Easter weekend and 15 August are dead across the whole scene. Christmas and New Year are busy.

Getting there and around at night

    • Alexander: metro line 3 (blue) to Kerameikos, then five minutes along Iera Odos to the corner of Megalou Alexandrou. The metro runs until about 00:30 on weeknights and until about 02:30 on Friday and Saturday nights. After that you are in taxi territory: a ride to Monastiraki or Syntagma is roughly €6 to €10, and Uber in Athens books licensed taxis, as do FreeNow and Beat.
    • Flex: Monastiraki (lines 1 and 3) is the stop; walk north up Athinas Street and turn into the small streets around Polykleitou. Omonia (lines 1 and 2) is an equal distance.
    • Ira Baths: Omonia metro, then two minutes. It closes at 18:00, so transport is never an issue.
    • Walking at night: Gazi and Monastiraki are busy until late and fine on foot. The blocks between Omonia and Metaxourgeio, and the streets around Omonia itself after midnight, attract drug dealing and rough sleeping; it is more unpleasant than dangerous, but take the main roads or a taxi rather than cutting through side streets.
    • Combine it: Alexander is a ten-minute walk from Sodade2, S-Cape and Big Bar in Gazi, so sauna first, then the bars (which only get going after 01:00), or the other way round at the weekend when the sauna runs to 06:00.

    Apps

Grindr is the default app in Athens and lights up inside both Alexander and Flex, with a lot of "here now" chat. Scruff has a strong following among the bear crowd that fills Flex on Wednesdays and Sundays. Romeo is used by older Greek men and is a good way to ask whether Ira Baths is open on a given day before you walk down. Photos inside the saunas are banned, and most Greeks on the apps are discreet in profile photos while being very direct in chat.

    The law

Same-sex sexual activity has been legal in Greece since 1951 and the age of consent was equalised in 2015. Civil partnerships for same-sex couples came in December 2015, and on 16 February 2024 Greece legalised same-sex marriage and joint adoption, the first Orthodox-majority country to do so. Anti-discrimination laws cover employment and services. Saunas operate as private clubs for adults; entry is 18+ and you may be asked for ID if you look young. Sex in public places remains an offence, which is part of why the saunas and cruise clubs exist as the legal alternative. Athens itself is relaxed; the Orthodox Church remains loud in opposition, but that does not touch a visitor in a sauna. GayOut rates Greece 97 out of 100 for LGBTQ+ safety.

    Health: testing, PrEP, PEP

    • Free, anonymous rapid tests for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B and C: Athens Checkpoint at Pittaki 4, Monastiraki, Tuesday to Saturday 12:00 to 20:00, a few minutes from Flex. Book by phone on 210 331 0400 or at mycheckpoint.gr; it is a finger-prick test with results in about 20 minutes. Run by Positive Voice, the Greek association of people living with HIV.
    • PrEP: Greece began providing PrEP free of charge through the public system on 19 May 2025, dispensed through hospital HIV units in Athens including Evangelismos, Laiko, Alexandra, Sotiria and Gennimatas. Visitors on their own PrEP should bring enough for the trip.
    • PEP must start within 72 hours of a risk. Go to the emergency department of a hospital with an infectious-diseases unit (Evangelismos, on Ipsilantou in Kolonaki, is the most central) or ask Checkpoint during opening hours which hospital is on duty. The public health agency is EODY.
    • Emergency: 112 works in English. Pharmacies (green cross) rotate as 24-hour duty pharmacies; the list is posted on every pharmacy door.

    Safety and etiquette

    • Towel-only, phones in the locker. All three venues ban photos and will throw you out for using a phone in the wet or dark areas.
    • "No" is a complete sentence. Óchi (όχι) or a shake of the head is understood everywhere, in any room. Greek men can be direct with hands; a firm no ends it.
    • Cash. We could not confirm card payment at any of the three. Bring euros; there are ATMs at Kerameikos, Monastiraki and Omonia.
    • Valuables. Use the locker, keep the key on your wrist, and do not bring more than you need. Theft is rare inside but not unheard of in cabins left unlocked.
    • Condoms and lube are free at Alexander; at Flex and Ira bring your own in case the dispensers are empty.
    • Drinks. Alexander has a bar; drink water between rounds in the steam room, especially in summer.
    • Drugs are illegal and dealing around Omonia is visible. Do not buy, do not carry; police do stop-and-search in that area.
    • Flip-flops are provided but bring your own if you are fussy; the floors at Ira in particular are old.
    • Hygiene: if a cabin or shower is dirty, tell the staff. All three respond better to a polite word than to an angry review afterwards.

Nearby alternatives: cruise clubs, beach, bars

    • Cruise clubs: 8Downtown and Attraxx are video-and-darkroom clubs without wet areas, cheaper than the saunas and open on Tuesdays when Flex is shut. Full details, plus the outdoor spots at Zappeion and Pedion tou Areos, are in the cruising guide and on the cruising map.
    • Beach: Limanakia, the rocky gay beach past Vouliagmeni, about 40 minutes by taxi. Nude, cruisy, no facilities; bring water.
    • Bars with a cruisy edge: Big Bar for bears, Noiz for the mixed queer crowd, Koukles for drag. See all Athens gay bars.
    • Shopping: Mega Sex Shop for supplies if the sauna dispensers are empty.
    • Elsewhere in Greece: Mykonos has no sauna, which is why Athenians say the island's sauna is the beach. Athens is the only Greek city with a real choice.

Greek words you will hear in a sauna (σάουνα)

    • Sáouna (σάουνα): sauna. Gkéi sáouna (γκέι σάουνα): gay sauna. Chamám (χαμάμ): steam bath.
    • Petséta (πετσέτα): towel. Sagionáres (σαγιονάρες): flip-flops.
    • Doulápi (ντουλάπι): locker. Kleidí (κλειδί): key. Kampína (καμπίνα): cabin.
    • Pósso káni i eísodos? (Πόσο κάνει η είσοδος;): how much is entry?
    • Ti óra kleínete? (Τι ώρα κλείνετε;): what time do you close?
    • Óchi, efcharistó (Όχι, ευχαριστώ): no, thank you. Nai (ναι): yes. Watch out: nai sounds like "no" but means yes.
    • Psonistíri (ψωνιστήρι): cruising, the slang you will see in Greek listings.

    At a glance

    • Alexander, Gazi / Metaxourgeio: 17:00 to 02:00, Friday and Saturday to 06:00. €18, under-30s €11. Largest; leather bar, maze, garden; late-night crowd.
    • Flex, Monastiraki: 15:00 to midnight, closed Tuesday. €17, less for under-30s. Bear Days Sunday and Wednesday; roof garden in summer; afternoon crowd.
    • Ira Baths, Omonia: about 10:00 to 18:00, phone first. Price not published. Daytime, small, older local crowd.

Keep this page honest

Prices and hours on this page come from the venues' own sites, the Globetrotter Guys (27 October 2026), Nomadic Boys (2026), the Gay Passport and Google reviews from 2026, cross-checked on 6 November 2026. Saunas change their hours without telling anyone. If you paid a different price, found a door shut, or know of a sauna we are missing, use the "suggest an edit" link on the venue page or tell us through the contact form, and say when you were there.
