Kihei has no full-time, exclusively gay bar — and on Maui as a whole, the LGBTQ+ scene is built around beaches, resorts and community events rather than a nightlife strip. That said, the town does have real anchors for a gay night out, clustered in and around Kihei Kalama Village at 1913 South Kihei Road, the row of bars and grills locals nickname the “BARmuda Triangle.”
Vibe Bar Maui
Vibe Bar Maui is a small craft-cocktail lounge in Kihei Kalama Village and the closest thing the town has to a gay bar. It is consistently the first result travelers turn up when searching for a gay night out on Maui, with a laid-back, mixed and welcoming crowd, resident DJs and rotating themed nights. It works best as a relaxed drinks stop along the South Kihei Road strip; hours can vary seasonally, so it is worth checking ahead.
da Playground Maui
For actual queer nightlife, the island’s main venue is da Playground Maui, a live-music and dance club in Wailuku about 20 minutes north of Kihei. Alongside its regular calendar of DJs, live bands, comedy and karaoke, it hosts a drag show on the last Sunday of each month and an LGBT dance party every second Thursday — the closest Maui comes to a regular gay club. Schedules and covers change by event, so check the venue’s social channels before heading out.
A Historical Note
The property at 551 South Kihei Road was for years the Maui Sunseeker, Hawaii’s largest gay-owned resort, before it was sold and rebranded as Kohea Kai Resort Maui in 2016. The gay-specific branding retired with the sale, though the beachfront boutique hotel remains LGBTQ+-welcoming.
Prefer beach and community over barhopping? Maui’s famous clothing-optional gathering spot, Little Beach at Makena, is a short drive south, and the island’s LGBTQ+ community comes together each June for Maui Pride in Wailuku.
