Salvador Carnival – Barra-Ondina LGBTQ+ Circuit
About This Event
Salvador's Carnaval is a six-day, city-wide street party, and the Barra-Ondina circuit along the seafront is where much of the LGBTQ+ crowd ends up. This is not a separate gay carnival. It is the main event, with a big queer presence woven through it. The Grupo Gay da Bahia estimated that about 1.2 million LGBTQ+ revellers took part in 2026. Bahia has its own history with queer carnival: the Concurso de Fantasia Gay, a costume contest in the old town, reached its 28th edition this year.
The Barra-Ondina route, officially the Circuito Dodô, runs from the Farol da Barra lighthouse along the coast road to Ondina. Trios elétricos roll through with big-name axé and pagode acts on top. Two ways to join: buy an abadá, the shirt that gets you inside a bloco's roped-off area, or go pipoca, out in the free crowd behind the ropes. Camarotes, the elevated paid boxes along the route, sell all-inclusive tickets with bars and toilets. A note on As Muquiranas, the bloco of straight men in drag: it is a 60-year tradition, but it has drawn repeated criticism for harassment, so it is no queer safe space.
Carnaval runs from Thursday to Ash Wednesday, which falls in February or early March depending on Easter. Book hotels near Barra or Ondina months ahead; prices jump and many places sell only full-carnival packages. Carry only what you need, keep your phone hidden, and drink a lot of water. The sun on the seafront is fierce.
The 2026 Carnaval ran from Thursday, 12 February to Tuesday, 17 February 2026. City hall said Saturday alone drew more than 1.5 million people across the three main circuits, a record for that day. The Concurso de Fantasia Gay took place on Monday, 16 February, at Praça Municipal. Official 2027 dates hadn't been published when we checked. Want a gay event on the same route? The Parada LGBT+ da Bahia uses the Barra-Ondina circuit in September.
