Arequipa is Peru's second city — the "White City" of colonial architecture and volcanic landscapes. The LGBTQ+ scene is smaller and more discreet than Lima, but exists for those who know where to look.

The Sauna Scene

Arequipa has a very limited dedicated gay sauna scene compared to larger Latin American cities. What exists are a few massage and wellness centres that operate with some degree of gay clientele informally, rather than dedicated facilities. The scene is primarily social and app-based (Grindr has reasonable density in the city).

Gay Bars & Nightlife

The city centre near the Plaza de Armas has a small number of bars and clubs that are gay-friendly or specifically gay. The scene operates discreetly — venues tend not to advertise explicitly, and finding them requires local knowledge or app connections. The general nightlife area around Calle San Francisco and Calle Moral in Cercado is the best starting point.

Practical Context

Peru decriminalized homosexuality in 1975 and Arequipa is relatively tolerant by Andean standards, but same-sex marriage is not legally recognised and public displays of affection are uncommon outside specifically gay spaces. The city's significant tourist infrastructure means international visitors are common and generally treated well.

⚠ Practical note: Arequipa sits at 2,335 metres elevation — altitude adjustment takes a day or two, during which exercise and exertion should be moderated. The city is generally safe for tourists in the centre; exercise normal urban caution in less central areas.

Getting There

Arequipa is well-connected by air from Lima (1 hour) and by long-distance bus. It's a common stop on the Peru backpacker circuit between Lima, Arequipa, Colca Canyon, and Puno/Lake Titicaca.
