PROMSEX — Centro de Promoción y Defensa de los Derechos Sexuales y Reproductivos — is the most important LGBTQ+ rights organisation in Peru and one of the most significant in the Andean region. Based in Lima's Miraflores district, PROMSEX has been at the centre of Peru's LGBTQ+ rights battles for over two decades, working as simultaneously a legal advocacy organisation, a documentation body, a community service provider, and a public communications platform. The organisation's work covers the full spectrum of Peruvian LGBTQ+ rights challenges: litigation before the Constitutional Court for civil union recognition (a battle that has been waged and lost multiple times in Congress), documentation of violence against LGBTQ+ Peruvians and trans women specifically, advocacy against discriminatory legislation, and support services for LGBTQ+ people navigating an hostile legal environment. The 2024 Peruvian Congressional law classifying trans people as mentally ill drew a sharp PROMSEX response — the organisation was one of the principal public voices opposing the law and has committed to legal challenges.
