Last verified: October 2026. Puerto Vallarta is the gay beach capital of Latin America, and almost everything you came for sits inside about six blocks of the Zona Romántica: twenty-odd bars on Lázaro Cárdenas, Ignacio L. Vallarta and Olas Altas, the only bathhouse, the gay beach at the south end of Playa Los Muertos, and most of the hotels in this guide. The choice is not whether a hotel welcomes you (nearly all of them do) but what you want outside your door: the club block, which runs until 06:00 on weekends; the beach-club sand in front of Blue Chairs and Mantamar; or the quiet of the Amapas hill, which costs you a steep climb home. Only two places are men-only in 2026, both small. This guide gives you the real walking minutes from the bar cluster, who closed (Hotel Mercurio, Villa David, Vallarta Cora), the visitor-ID rules Mexican hotels enforce, the 21% that lands on your bill, and what Beef Dip, Pride and New Year do to prices.
Pick by trip style
| Stay style | Hotels | Walk to the bars | Vibe | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Men only, social | Piñata PV (7 rooms) · Spartacus Hostel (dorms) | 2 min / 8 min | Men only including staff; clothing-optional pool, jacuzzi and steam room at Piñata; hostel bracelet gets you perks at the Spartacus sauna | Men who want the Palm Springs resort feeling in Mexico and do not need a big pool |
| Gay-owned luxury | The Tryst · Casa Cupula | 7 min flat / 7 min plus a steep hill | Rooftop pools, cocktails, a mixed gay crowd rather than a men-only one; Casa Cupula's Pool Club is the only swimsuit-optional pool in town | Couples and anyone who wants design, service and a lift (the Tryst has one; Casa Cupula does not) |
| On the gay beach | Blue Chairs · Almar / Mantamar · Sapphire · Delfín (ex-San Marino) | 6–18 min | Beach club downstairs, DJs from 14:00, drag on the rooftop; the Beef Dip and Pride pool parties happen here | Anyone whose day is sand and whose night is the pool party, bears especially (Delfín, Blue Chairs) |
| Inside the club block | Posada de Roger · La Iguana · Hotel Amaca · Petit Hotel Pilitas | 2–8 min | Mid-range, adults-only at La Iguana, Amaca and Pilitas; you hear the clubs until closing on Friday and Saturday | Budget and mid-range travellers who will stumble home at 05:00 |
| Quiet, river or Centro | Rivera del Río · Río Malecón · Hotel Rosita · Villa Premiere | 9–30 min across the river | Art hotels on the Río Cuale, the Malecón, the oldest hotel in town (1948); straight-mixed but easy | Those who want to sleep, and walk 10–25 minutes to the scene |
Where to sleep, in real minutes
Walking times are measured from the heart of the bar cluster (the Lázaro Cárdenas 250s, where CC Slaughters, Industry, La Noche and Mr Flamingo share one corner with the Spartacus sauna) at 80 metres a minute with corners counted; the same number appears on every hotel card on this site. Streets are cobbled and uneven, so wear shoes at night, not flip-flops.
- The cluster itself (Posada de Roger 2 min, Piñata 2, La Iguana 2, Amaca 4, Los Muertos Hostal 5, Delfín 6, Villa del Mar 7, Pilitas 8, Spartacus Hostel 8): flat, lit, loud. Industry and CC Slaughters run to 06:00 on weekends; Paco's Ranch starts its drag at 00:30. Ask for a room at the back.
- The gay beach (Sapphire 10 min, Blue Chairs 12, Almar/Mantamar 12–18, Delfín 6): the southern end of Playa Los Muertos, just south of the sail-shaped pier at the end of Francisca Rodríguez. The bronze seahorse in front of Mantamar marks the entrance; Blue Chairs and Green Chairs are the next two sets of loungers. From the sand to the bars is a flat walk up Olas Altas or Amapas.
- Amapas and the hill (The Tryst 7 min, Boana 13, Casa Cupula 7 on the map but with the last five minutes steep uphill): the Tryst at Púlpito 138 sits at the foot of the slope, next door to Garbo, and is effectively flat; Casa Cupula is the hillside one, no lift, with a free ride down to the bars on request and the Púlpito stairs (the Drag Derby stairs) as the walk home. Reviews are unanimous: down is fine, up is the test.
- Across the Río Cuale (Rivera del Río 9 min, Río Malecón 10, Rosita 22, Villa Premiere 30): cross by the Malecón bridge or the island footbridges and you are at the Lázaro Cárdenas park in ten minutes. Rosita, at the north end of the Malecón, is a MXN 100 ride at night.
- Hotel Zone, Marina, Nuevo Vallarta (Secrets, Sheraton, Westin, Marriott, Hilton): a car, every time, 15–45 minutes and MXN 100–300. Nuevo Vallarta is in the next state. Sleep here only if the all-inclusive is the point of the trip.
- Conchas Chinas and the south shore (Hyatt Ziva, Garza Blanca, Hotel Mousai): the posh coves 2–8 km south along Highway 200; taxi in, taxi out, no nightlife of their own.
- Hotel Mercurio (Francisca Rodríguez), the gay hotel with the Sunday pool parties, was forcibly closed on 17 May 2024 when a court judgment from a decades-old ownership dispute was enforced and its contents seized; guests were put on the street that night. Nothing has reopened there. Booking sites still list it; ignore them.
- The Abbey became The Tryst in October 2024 after fifteen empty years.
- Vallarta Cora (men-only, clothing-optional) closed on 31 May 2016; the building is Petit Hotel Pilitas. Villa David, the men-only B&B above Centro, closed in 2023. Casa Fantasia and Descanso del Sol are long gone.
- Hotel San Marino is now Delfín PV, part of the Blue Chairs and Mantamar event circuit.
- Bars: Los Amigos closed in 2025 and the space is Sanctuary PV; BOYS PV, a cruising bar on Ignacio L. Vallarta, opened in March 2026; La Noche has been for sale since January 2025 and still operates; the Spartacus sauna opened a second branch in Nuevo Vallarta in 2025.
- The Hard Rock Hotel Vallarta in Nuevo Vallarta is closed for renovation until mid-December 2026.
- Bringing someone back: Mexican hotels register every overnight visitor against an official ID, and reception will ask for it at 03:00 as readily as at 15:00. Almar charges after roughly three hours; Blue Chairs works on wristbands; the condo towers (Pinnacle, V-Series) pre-register visitors or send them home at 23:00. Book for two from the start if there is any chance of company, and tell your date to bring his INE or passport. Piñata and the Spartacus hostel are men-only by house rule, so the question does not arise.
- Age: every gay hotel here is adults-only (18+); Lindo Mar checks in at 21. Drinking age is 18; the clubs card foreigners rarely, the sauna always.
- Taxes: 16% IVA plus Jalisco's lodging tax, which rose to about 5% for 2026 (it was 3–4%), so expect roughly 21% on top of any "from" rate quoted by the hotel or a gay directory; Casa Cupula states it openly. No resort fees at the Zona Romántica gay hotels; the Tryst holds a USD 300 deposit.
- The "tourist fee" that is not one: Puerto Vallarta's MXN 141 fee for foreign visitors, approved in 2025, was struck down by Mexico's Supreme Court in December 2025 and never collected. A redrafted, voluntary MXN 160 once-a-year version was announced for 2026; in practice collection has been patchy. If a hotel adds it to your bill, ask what it is; it is not a hotel charge.
- Money: about 18–18.5 pesos to the dollar in October 2026. Pay in pesos, draw cash from bank-branch ATMs (Banorte, BBVA, Santander, Scotiabank; the HSBC at the river bridge has closed), decline the ATM's own conversion offer. Tip 15–20% in restaurants (check whether a "propina sugerida" is already on the bill), MXN 50–100 a day for housekeeping. Dollars are accepted at the big hotels at a poor rate.
- Clothing-optional: legal nowhere public. The Pool Club at Casa Cupula, Piñata's pool and the Spartacus dorms are the only places; the gay beach is swimwear-on, and the rocks at the south end are a long-standing cruising spot (listing) where public sex is a municipal offence (a fine or up to 36 hours in the cells), rarely enforced and complaint-driven, which is a reason for discretion rather than a licence.
- The app warning that matters: in June 2025 the US Consulate in Guadalajara confirmed several kidnappings of American visitors who had met their captors on dating apps, with the most recent cases in Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Nayarit; drink-spiking robberies after an app date have been reported here since at least 2020. Meet at a bar first, let the hotel register him, keep your drink in your hand. It is the one real safety rule of the town.
- Cartels and the news: on 22–23 February 2026, after the killing of the CJNG leader, roadblocks and arson hit the whole state; in the Zona Romántica the Farmacia Guadalajara on Insurgentes burned, flights were cancelled for a day and hotels kept guests inside. It was over within 48 hours, and the US advisory, while rating Jalisco "reconsider travel", places no restriction on Puerto Vallarta. Petty theft is the normal risk; violence against visitors in the Zona Romántica is rare.
- Budget: Spartacus Hostel (men only, USD 45–95, sauna perks); Boana Torre Malibú (kitchenettes a block above the beach); Posada de Roger (the best-scored cheap bed on the strip).
- Mid-range: Piñata PV (men only, book early, seven rooms); Delfín PV (beach, bears, the party calendar); Blue Chairs (the gay beach itself, if you accept the rooms).
- Upper: The Tryst (gay-owned, two pools, a lift); Casa Cupula (the hill, the Pool Club, 24 years of gay ownership); Almar (the resort-and-beach-club machine).
- Quiet: Rivera del Río on the river, Villa Premiere north of the Malecón, both a short ride from the noise.
- Airport: PVR is 7 km north, 25 minutes in normal traffic, longer in December. Official airport taxis are prepaid at the desk inside arrivals by zone, roughly MXN 400–550 to the Zona Romántica in 2026, pay in pesos. Uber costs MXN 250–300; a late-2025 court ruling allows pick-ups at the terminal, but most drivers still send you across the pedestrian bridge over the highway (stairs, luggage, heat), so check the pin the app gives you. DiDi works at similar prices. The bus marked "Centro" from below the same bridge costs MXN 14 and takes 40 minutes to Los Muertos. The timeshare desks between customs and the exit are not information desks; say no and keep walking.
- In town: everything in this guide except the Hotel Zone and the south shore is on foot. Uber within the Zona Romántica is about MXN 100, to the Marina about 200; yellow taxis have no meter, so agree the fare first. Hill hotels: Casa Cupula drives guests down to the bars for free; the climb back is yours.
- After the clubs: most people walk; the streets around Lázaro Cárdenas and Olas Altas are lit and busy until 05:00 on weekends. Stay on them rather than cutting through the dark streets behind Insurgentes. Rideshare availability drops after midnight, so a sitio taxi outside Industry is the fallback.
- Boats: water taxis from Los Muertos pier to Las Ánimas, Quimixto and Yelapa from about 11:00, last boat back around 16:30, roughly MXN 400–450 return; a new Yelapa ferry runs from the marina three mornings a week. Whale season is December to March.
- SETAC, the community HIV and sexual-health centre at Lázaro Cárdenas 379 (afternoons on weekdays, Saturday mornings), does rapid HIV and STI tests and hands out condoms; the Vallarta Gay+ Community Center on Morelos is the other point of contact. Its free PrEP programme lost its funding, so bring your own supply; pharmacies sell PrEP and PEP with a prescription.
- PEP within 72 hours: the private hospitals are the reliable route at night: Hospital CMQ Premiere (Francisco Villa 1749, 24 h), Hospiten in the Hotel Zone, San Javier at the Marina, and the Vallarta Medical Center, which works directly with foreign insurers. Without insurance expect a card hold of several thousand dollars for an admission; US Medicare is not accepted.
- Pharmacies: the 24-hour Farmacia Guadalajara at Insurgentes and Lázaro Cárdenas reopened in June 2026 after the February fire.
- Sun, water, flags: UV is extreme year-round; tap water is treated but everyone drinks bottled; obey the beach flags (red means no swimming, purple means jellyfish), as Los Muertos has rips after any Pacific swell. Dengue is lowest in years but repellent at dusk from July to November is sensible.

Men only, gay-owned, or merely friendly: the honest list
Puerto Vallarta is not Palm Springs. The men-only, clothing-optional guesthouses that defined the town in the 2000s have mostly gone: Vallarta Cora closed in 2016 and became the mixed Petit Hotel Pilitas, Villa David closed in 2023, Hotel Mercurio was shut by the courts in May 2024. What replaced them is bigger and more mixed: adults-only LGBT resorts where the pool is swimwear-on and the party is the product. Here is what each place actually is.
| Hotel | Address | What it really is | Visitors | Walk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Piñata PV | Zona Romántica (booked direct) | The one true men-only hotel left: seven rooms, gay-owned, male staff, clothing-optional pool, jacuzzi and steam room, rooftop gym, bar, no lift. Rooms USD 179–239 (2026). | Men only; ask the house | 2 min |
| Spartacus Boutique Hostel | Pilitas 156 | Men-only, clothing-optional hostel of 43 dorm beds a few steps from the beach, run with the sauna; USD 45–95. Rated 9.4 on Hostelworld in 2026. | Men only | 8 min |
| The Tryst | Púlpito 138 | Gay-owned (Tristan Schukraft, also Fire Island and Puerto Rico), opened October 2024 in the long-empty Abbey Hotel: about 50 rooms, rooftop pool and bar, a second pool with swim-up bar and hot tub, a lift. Adults-only in practice, not men-only. USD 220–480 before tax, USD 300 deposit. | Registered; one source says no visitors to rooms after dark, so ask when you book | 7 min |
| Casa Cupula | Callejón de la Igualdad 129, Amapas | Gay-owned since 2002, about 20 rooms on the hill, 18+, pools, gym, the Cupula Bistro, and the Pool Club, the only swimsuit-optional pool in Puerto Vallarta (free for guests, day pass for others, some parties men-only). No lift. USD 135–245 for the entry rooms in high season, far more for the suites. | Register at the desk; Pool Club day pass | 7 min + hill |
| Blue Chairs Resort by the Sea | Malecón 4, on the beach | The original gay beach hotel, about 86 rooms, adults only, rooftop bar with nightly drag 20:00–22:00 and a Sunday drag brunch, beach club 08:00–19:00. Rooms are plain and the building shows its age; you pay for the location. MXN 1,000–3,000 a night. Beef Dip's welcome and foam parties are here. | Wristband and ID at the door | 12 min |
| Almar Resort | Amapas 380, on the beach | The big one: two towers, 134 oceanfront suites, adults only, LGBT-branded; the Top Sky Bar on the 13th floor and Mantamar Beach Club at sand level with the infinity pool and the DJs. Not gay-owned as far as anyone states, and not men-only. From USD 110 to about 240 before tax. | Visitors register; more than about three hours is charged (confirm at the desk) | 12–18 min |
| Delfín PV Beach Resort | Rodolfo Gómez 111, on the beach | The former Hotel San Marino with a renovated LGBT wing and an adults-only wing with its own pool; three-star, bear-friendly, host hotel of Beef Dip 2026 and venue of its Tidal Wave pool party. | Standard ID registration | 6 min |
| Petit Hotel Pilitas | Pilitas 174 | Vallarta Cora's old building, now an adults-only LGBTQ boutique of 17–18 suites, pool open 09:00 to midnight, no lift, "no parties" in the house rules. Not men-only, not clothing-optional any more. | Registered guests | 8 min |
| Boana Torre Malibú | Amapas 325 | Gay condo-hotel since 1997, units owned privately and rented one by one, kitchenettes, USD 65–315; the long-stay and budget classic, open to everyone. | Varies by unit | 13 min |
| Sapphire Ocean Club | Malecón 1, Amapas | Adults-only beach club with a handful of suites above it, thirty seconds from the loungers; no stated gay policy, gay crowd. USD 180–350. | Registered guests | 10 min |
| La Iguana · Amaca | Lázaro Cárdenas 310 · Pino Suárez 583 | Small adults-only hotels inside the bar grid, rooftop pools, gay-marketed; a 2026 review calls Amaca tired, so read recent feedback. | Registered guests | 2–4 min |
| Everything else on our list | — | Mixed hotels: Posada de Roger (courtyard, tiny rooftop pool, the best guest scores on the strip), Villa del Mar, Los Muertos Hostal, La Terraza Inn, Rivera del Río, Río Malecón (it hosted the Pride pool parties in 2026), Rosita, Villa Premiere, Secrets Vallarta Bay, Amaria. All fine with two men in one bed; none is gay-run. | ID registration | — |

Health
Puerto Vallarta in a paragraph
The Zona Romántica is officially colonia Emiliano Zapata, and in October 2025 the city approved it as Mexico's first government-recognised LGBTQ+ district, with rainbow crossings and signage funded for 2026. Jalisco has had marriage equality in practice since 2016 and in law since 2022. Do the things everyone does: the sunset from Los Muertos pier, a day in Yelapa, pescado embarazado from a beach grill, raicilla (the coast's own agave spirit) instead of a third margarita, Paco's drag at half past midnight, and the Sunday drag brunch on the Blue Chairs roof. Learn two words: de ambiente means gay-friendly in the local polite register, and buga is a straight person. Season runs November to May; summer is cheap, humid and stormy.

Frequently asked questions
Which Puerto Vallarta hotels are men-only in 2026?
Two: Piñata PV (seven rooms, clothing-optional pool) and the Spartacus Boutique Hostel (dorms). Vallarta Cora closed in 2016, Villa David in 2023, Hotel Mercurio in 2024. Everything else that calls itself a gay hotel, from Blue Chairs to the Tryst, is adults-only and mixed.

Where should I stay to walk to the gay bars?
Anywhere in the Zona Romántica: the whole scene sits within 2 to 13 minutes of the Lázaro Cárdenas corner. Posada de Roger, La Iguana and Piñata are two minutes away; Blue Chairs and Almar are a flat 12 to 18 minutes along the beach; Casa Cupula is close on the map and steep in reality.
Where exactly is the gay beach?
The southern end of Playa Los Muertos, immediately south of the pier, between Blue Chairs, Green Chairs and Mantamar; the bronze seahorse marks the spot. Beach clubs fill from about 14:00.

Can my date come back to my hotel?
Yes, with ID: Mexican hotels register overnight visitors, Almar charges after about three hours, the condo towers have earlier cut-offs. Book for two if you expect company. Meet at a bar first, because the June 2025 consular warning about dating-app kidnappings in Puerto Vallarta is real.
Is there a bathhouse?
Yes, the Spartacus at Lázaro Cárdenas 240, four floors with a rooftop pool, open from the afternoon until about 03:00 on weekdays and 06:00 at weekends; lockers were MXN 400–500 at the last published prices. Casa Cupula's Pool Club is the swimsuit-optional alternative by day.

When are Beef Dip and Pride 2027?
Beef Dip runs 24–31 January 2027 at Blue Chairs, Delfín and CC Slaughters. Vallarta Pride 2027 has not been announced; expect the third or fourth week of May, with the parade on the Thursday.
How much tax goes on the room?
About 21%: 16% IVA plus Jalisco's lodging tax of roughly 5% in 2026. There is no resort fee at the gay hotels and no valid city tourist fee; the MXN 141 charge was annulled by the Supreme Court in December 2025.
