The honest summary: Denver is a city of about 740,000 people (3 million in the metro) with one of the bigger gay scenes between Chicago and the West Coast. Most of it sits on East Colfax Avenue in Capitol Hill, where a handful of gay bars are within a few blocks of each other and of The Center on Colfax, the community centre that runs Denver Pride. The big dance club, Tracks, is in RiNo, and the leather bar, the Denver Eagle, moved to West Colfax in 2022. What Denver doesn't have in 2026 is a gay bathhouse: the last one closed in 2022. The lesbian bar scene is down to one brand-new room.
Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage has been legal in Colorado since October 2014, and voters removed the old constitutional ban (Amendment J) in November 2024 with 64% in favour. State law bans discrimination on sexual orientation and gender identity in jobs, housing and public places, and the 2025 Kelly Loving Act added deadnaming and misgendering. In March 2026 the US Supreme Court ruled against Colorado's conversion-therapy ban as applied to talk therapy (Chiles v. Salazar), so that ban is no longer fully in force.
Where the scene is
Capitol Hill and East Colfax are the centre. Charlie's, X Bar, Buddies, Tight End, Needz and The Center are all on Colfax between Broadway and Franklin Street, close enough to walk between. The wider area is promoted as the Lavender Hill queer cultural district. It's a community project, announced in June 2023 by The Center, the Colfax Ave business district and Black Pride Colorado, not an official city designation, and its edges are deliberately loose: Capitol Hill, Cheesman Park, City Park West, Baker and parts of Five Points.
Older guides send you to South Broadway. Today that strip has one gay bar (Li'l Devils) and the rest of the night is on Colfax. RiNo, north of downtown, has Tracks; the Art District on Santa Fe has Trade and Town Hall Collaborative.
Bars and clubs
We checked Out Front (Denver's LGBTQ+ magazine), Westword, Denverite, Visit Denver, Travel Gay and the bars' own sites and Google listings in October 2026.
- Charlie's, 900 E Colfax Ave: the country-western bar, open since 1981 and the home bar of the Colorado Gay Rodeo Association. Line dancing and two-step lessons on Wednesday and Thursday, drag on Sunday, open daily to 2am.
- X Bar, 629 E Colfax Ave: dance bar with a big couch patio, a go-go and drag stage and Friday DJ nights. Open 3pm to 2am daily.
- Buddies, 504 E Colfax Ave: opened in 2023 by six friends; darts, pool, burgers, trivia and weekend brunch.
- Tight End, 1501 E Colfax Ave: the gay sports bar, with drag bingo on Fridays.
- Tracks, 3500 Walnut St, RiNo: the big club, dating to 1980 and Westword's Best LGBTQ+ Club in 2025. Thursday to Sunday from 9pm; Thursday is 18+, Saturday 21+, Sunday is drag.
- #VYBE, 1027 N Broadway, Golden Triangle: family-run "no label" LGBTQ+ bar with a balcony, karaoke on Monday and Wednesday, and drag.
- Hamburger Mary's, 1336 E 17th Ave: drag restaurant in a purple house. Weekend drag brunch (book), Wednesday drag bingo.
- Trade, 475 Santa Fe Dr: leather and fetish bar with a patio and parking; Thursday underwear night.
- Denver Eagle, 5110 W Colfax Ave: the leather bar, at this West Colfax address since March 2022. Maps that still show East Colfax are out of date. Closed Mondays.
- R&R, 4958 E Colfax Ave, Park Hill: generally cited as Denver's oldest gay bar, from the 1970s. A dive with martinis, pool and regulars.
- Li'l Devils Lounge, 255 S Broadway, Baker: neighbourhood gay bar with a heated, fire-pit patio.
- El Potrero, 4501 E Virginia Ave, Glendale: gay Latin nightclub since 2008, reggaeton and banda, Wednesday to Sunday.
- Town Hall Collaborative, 525 Santa Fe Dr: LGBTQ+ community café and bar, a daytime alternative.
- Denver Pride (The Center on Colfax): last full weekend of June. In 2026 construction moved PrideFest out of Civic Center Park onto 16th Street (Broadway to Arapahoe) as a single free day, Sunday 28 June. The parade started that morning by Cheesman Park and ran west along 17th Avenue, and the Pride 5K ran from Cheesman on the Saturday. Organisers put attendance at around 500,000 across the month's events. 2027 dates and location had not been announced at the time of writing.
- Tracks Pride Weekend: ticketed club nights at Tracks and ReelWorks the same week (25 to 27 June 2026; everything sold out).
- Black Pride Colorado: a week in early June (around 8 to 15 June 2026), including the Strange Fruit Gala.
- CinemaQ: Denver Film's LGBTQ+ film festival at the Sie FilmCenter (29 to 31 May 2026).
- Rocky Mountain Regional Rodeo: the Colorado Gay Rodeo Association's summer rodeo, billed as America's longest-running gay rodeo (24 to 26 July 2026).
- Denver Sweet (Capitol Hill): closed 27 July 2025.
- Boyztown (117 Broadway): closed December 2024.
- Blush & Blu (1526 E Colfax): closed 5 October 2024; the space is now a general house-music bar.
- The Pearl (lesbian bar, 22nd and California): closed 14 April 2026.
- Triangle (2036 Broadway): closed October 2023.
- Midtowne Spa (2935 Zuni St): closed 2022, Denver's last bathhouse.
- Denver Wrangler (bear bar): closed June 2018.
- Denver Eagle on East Colfax: not closed, moved to 5110 W Colfax in 2022.
- Glow Lounge (631 E Colfax): still open next to X Bar, but we found no gay-press source calling it a gay bar, so we don't list it.
- Goldspot Brewing (queer- and women-owned, Regis): closed 1 February 2026. Petals & Pages, the LGBTQ+ bookshop on Santa Fe Drive, has announced it is closing.
- Getting in: the A Line train runs from Denver International Airport to Union Station in about 37 minutes, every 15 to 30 minutes, for about $10.
- Getting around: the 15 and 15L buses run the length of Colfax, but between Capitol Hill, RiNo, Santa Fe and West Colfax most people use rideshare at night.
- Altitude: Denver sits at 5,280 feet. Alcohol hits harder and the sun burns faster, so drink water.
- Safety: Colfax is busy and mostly fine, but some blocks are rough late at night. Take a ride home rather than walking long stretches.
- Health: the Denver Sexual Health Clinic (660 N Bannock St) does STI and HIV testing, PrEP and PEP by appointment. Colorado Health Network on East Colfax offers HIV services, and Queer Asterisk offers queer-affirming counselling.
- Shopping: Needz, across from Charlie's, has sold gay men's underwear and gear since 2006.
Champagne Tiger, the queer-run restaurant in the old Tom's Diner at 601 E Colfax, does a Sunday drag brunch and Thursday drag bingo. Colorado's last call is 2am everywhere.

Lesbian and sapphic Denver
This is the part of the scene that keeps losing rooms. Blush & Blu, Colorado's long-running lesbian bar on Colfax, closed on 5 October 2024. The Pearl, which followed it, closed on 14 April 2026 after a refunded GoFundMe. On 28 October 2026 a former Pearl manager soft-opened Wild Tulips at 13th and Clarkson, a sapphic bar with a pool table, drag, trivia and dancing; it started alcohol-free while the liquor licence was pending. Sapphic Collective runs roving parties, and the events tab carries sapphic speed-dating and social nights.
Saunas, men's clubs and cruising
Denver has no gay bathhouse. Midtowne Spa on Zuni Street closed in 2022, and the Denver Swim Club on East Colfax is closed too. Steamworks has never had a Denver branch, whatever some listings say. The only replacement is the Denver Men's Club, a private members-only club with group nights in the Santa Fe arts district. We couldn't confirm its address, so it isn't listed here.
Cheesman Park is part of Denver's gay history. Westword and Rocky Mountain PBS describe it as a gathering and cruising ground for decades, and a 1974 "gay-in" there counts as Denver's first Pride. Today it's a busy city park; public sex is illegal, police patrol, and parks close at 11pm. Use the bars or the apps.

Pride and the yearly calendar
The Center's own calendar fills the rest of the year: support groups, a lesbian lounge, book clubs, karaoke and free STI testing days. Aspen Gay Ski Week (17 to 24 January 2027, its 50th year) is about four hours west and isn't a Denver event.

Where to stay
Capitol Hill puts you within walking distance of most bars, but hotel choice there is thin; Ember Hostel on Grant Street is the budget option. Most visitors stay downtown. Travel Gay lists the Kimpton Hotel Monaco, which also runs its own Pride page, and OutxOut names The Curtis, Hotel Teatro and Catbird (in RiNo, a short walk from Tracks). The Crawford sits inside Union Station where the airport train stops. Book early for Pride weekend.
Practical tips

A few words
Locals say "Cap Hill" for Capitol Hill, "RiNo" for River North and "SoBo" for South Broadway. Colfax has long been called "the longest, wickedest street in America", and Denver is "the Mile High City" because a marker on the State Capitol steps sits one mile above sea level.
