The honest picture

Antigua & Barbuda decriminalized on 5 July 2022, when the High Court struck down its buggery laws — and notably read the constitution's 'sex' discrimination clause to include sexual orientation. The case was brought by activist Orden David together with Women Against Rape (WAR), with the regional ECADE strategy behind it. The movement paid dearly for its visibility: Orden David, the key figure of the MESH community network, disappeared in tragic circumstances in early 2025 — and today the island's community and legal work rests on WAR, Intersect Antigua-Barbuda and ECADE. Honor that context; the ease you'll enjoy here was fought for. And you will enjoy ease: in practice, Antigua doesn't need declared gay bars. The international yachting culture of English Harbour and the resorts of Dickenson Bay create a cosmopolitan, unbothered environment where couples can simply enjoy the island, drama-free.

The Sunday institution — Shirley Heights

The island's most open, buzzing social anchor is the Shirley Heights Sunday BBQ: steelpan and reggae over the lookout's staggering view of English Harbour, barbecue smoke, and everyone — locals, sailors, tourists, couples of every kind — mixing on one terrace. If you have one Sunday on Antigua, it's spoken for.

A perfect Antigua evening

Afternoon: a cocktail and a dip in the plunge pool at Sheer Rocks. Sunday sunset: live music and a cold local Wadadli at Shirley Heights. Night: sailor-crowd cocktails at Catherine's Café or Loose Cannon in English Harbour.

Cruise day vs. staying over

The St. John's cruise port (Heritage Quay) is accessible and safe by day — but downtown is conservative and offers no nightlife. The liberal energy lives at English Harbour and Dickenson Bay; if you're staying over, base yourself there.

Barbuda — the disconnect button

The sister island is the luxury-quiet escape: pink-sand beaches, near-empty horizons, and secluded resorts (Nobu Barbuda at the top end) offering total privacy for couples who want to vanish for a few days.

The digital scene

The apps run discreetly — blank local profiles standard, tourists freer — and community life moves through WAR's and Intersect's programming rather than any venue.
