Halifax Pride Festival

Halifax Pride began with a small march of about 75 people through the city's North End in 1988, protesting the lack of legal protection against discrimination. Some wore paper bags over their heads to avoid being recognised and potentially losing their jobs. Today, it's an 11-day festival that draws upwards of 50,000 people every July across the Halifax Regional Municipality.

The parade kicks off on the first Saturday, not the last - a common misconception. If you're only coming for the parade, arrive at the start of the festival. It ends at the Garrison Grounds below the Citadel, which also hosts the main outdoor events. The rest of the programme is a mix of events run by Halifax Pride and community groups, including dances, drag nights, sober events, all-ages events, and family afternoons. Many listings include ASL interpretation and mask policies, a rarity at Pride events.

The parade and most outdoor events are free. Downtown hotels fill up quickly in mid-July, so book ahead or consider Dartmouth across the harbour - it's a short ferry ride away.
The 2026 festival ran from July 16 to 26, with the parade at noon on Saturday, July 18.
Before the parade, the executive director expected close to 40,000 people along the route and about 6,000 marching.
Funding has been tight, with some pulled in 2025 while costs like parade traffic control kept rising.
The 2027 dates hadn't been announced when we checked.
