About this place Archives gaies du Québec

Since 1983, the Archives gaies du Québec have been quietly saving what would otherwise vanish: the documents, photographs, periodicals, posters and personal papers of queer life in Quebec. Founded by Ross Higgins and Jacques Prince, the AGQ is an independent non-profit — no university or government owns it — and that independence is part of its character: this is the community keeping its own memory. The collections run from pre-liberation clippings and bar ephemera through the AIDS years to contemporary art, and the archive collaborates regularly on exhibitions, including with Fierté Montréal. It is recognised internationally, appearing in the Library of Congress guide to LGBTQ archives. Visiting: the AGQ occupies a suite in an office building on Rue Atateken at the edge of the Village — not a storefront museum. Research visits are by appointment on weekdays (email info@agq.ca or call 514-287-9987); the archivists famously advise a warm layer for the cold-storage rooms. For travelers this is a specialist stop — but for anyone researching family history, Quebec queer culture or the Village's own past, it is the primary source, staffed by people who lived much of it.
