Chicago's cruising scene splits between indoor spots and a few outdoor areas. The saunas around Boystown handle most of the organized action. Outdoor spots exist, but they're less formal.
Indoor venues
The saunas and dedicated cruising spots near Boystown are your best bet. They're established, have regular hours, and know their clientele. Entry runs $20-50, depending on the venue and whether you want a locker or a cabin. Most open in the early afternoon. Weekday afternoons draw a regular crowd; weekend evenings are busier.
Because of Chicago's International Mr. Leather (IML) connection, expect the indoor scene to get much busier around Memorial Day weekend. Visiting leather community members pack these places. Some venues run specific events or stay open longer during IML week.
Montrose Beach
Montrose Beach, on Lake Michigan, has been Chicago's gay beach for years. The northern section is where the gay crowd gathers, especially on warm summer weekends. The "Belmont Rocks" tradition goes back decades—the actual rocks, a popular cruising and socializing spot, were removed in the early 2000s during a park renovation. But the beach area is still a well-known gathering point. On a hot July weekend, it's packed.
Montrose Beach is more of a social scene than active cruising during the day. Historically, things were more active around the dunes at the north end of the beach, but that varies by time of day and season. It's a city park, so act accordingly.

Grant Park area
The lakefront parkland around Grant Park and further south has seen cruising, particularly in wooded or less-trafficked sections. This is less reliable than the beach or indoor venues. These are public parks with regular foot traffic from cyclists, joggers, and families. Discretion is key.
Practical notes
Indoor venues are straightforward: pay entry, follow the rules, be considerate. For outdoor spots, remember you're in a public space. The lakefront trails get heavy use in summer. Carry what you need and be aware of your surroundings.
