I've been seeing an endocrine there for around the past year. I have had far more appointments rescheduled than i expected and it's incredibly difficult to get in to anyone at the clinic. I had been on testosterone for years prior to starting with this clinic. I was told by the endocrine that he "didn't know how" to prescribe my testosterone monthly and that I would have to switch to weekly doses. On our second visit (the only two times I've actually gotten in to see him, since he seems to never be there when they schedule me) he told me that it was insurance that wouldn't cover it. I haven't switched insurance plans, I have double checked with my insurance and I have confirmed that it was actually never ran by my insurance to begin with. Its already difficult enough getting health care as a trans person but being expected to constantly reschedule and have an endocrine who doesn't understand how to write a prescription makes it even more difficult. Especially when you have to max out your pto after another rescheduled appointment only to be told that I should never been scheduled that day to begin with.
The LGBTQ Care clinic here is life-saving. A star lost for low availability and growing pains, but that's not their fault. They're doing their best with such a small staff. They work with patients who work with them in return, and while it's not perfect (seriously, it takes forever to get an appointment, and there was some early headbutting with the doctor as we learned how to work as a team), I'm not driving an hour out for care for nothing. I feel like they genuinely care about the work they're doing. I've had negative experiences with other parts of UH, so this review is entirely for the LGBTQ clinic. If you're looking for a sign to start care--stop waiting. I know it's hard to make that phone call. It took me two years, and I only regret letting my anxiety bully me out of it for so long.
Really thought once I got health insurance that Truman (UH) was going to be a better experience, but boy was I mistaken. I wasted a year of having insurance on this hospital. The “LGBTQ Clinic” is not a dedicated space, but is actually the diabetes clinic MWF. Therein lies the problem. You can only get an appointment 2 days out of the week, making appointment wait times asinine. I really thought after my first appointment that the doctor was going to get the ball rolling, but they and Truman as a whole, is a continual let down. If you have insurance DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME ON THIS HOSPITAL. I had 3 different issues that required follow ups with specialists. I was contacted immediately by the sleep clinic, had my initial appointment, and then from there Truman did what Truman does best and managed to completely mess up scheduling a sleep study. First it was a last minute cancelation of the in person sleep study, then it was we will call you to schedule an at home study, then it was days of calling to finally reach the right person, only to never hear from them again. At the same time making a follow up appointment at the LGBTQ Clinic was just as frustrating. These people don’t answer the phone and if you do get someone it’s probably some guy in his 90s on the other end saying they will call you back to schedule an appointment. The only good part of my time at Truman was my psychiatrist who, incidentally, left Truman right after I started seeing him because he didn’t like what he was seeing. Behavioral Health should absolutely have an overhaul and your practitioners need oversight. I was able to be misdiagnosed as bipolar and receive lithium for over a year without a single blood test to check for toxicity levels. Thank god for receiving insurance and this psychiatrist putting an immediate stop to the absolute insanity that is this hospital. From the scheduling, to the joke of an lgbtq clinic, to the scheduling nightmare, to the unsafe waiting rooms due to who the primary clientelle of this hospital is… just go to KU where you’ll actually get your insurance worth of care.
My first experience was amazing they gave me so much information about how I can move forward. Molly is really caring and understanding I would definitely recommend going here and seeing her.
The lgbt clinic here has some wonderful doctors who are supportive and encouraging of the goals you make for your health. They work with you and let you know all the options you have and what would be best for your specific needs. Love them a lot.
