About this place The Jungle and Juanita's historical marker

The Jungle opened in 1952 at 715 Commerce Street, and Juanita Brazier ran Juanita's Place next door. They're the first known gay bars in Nashville. The Tennessean printed 27 names after a raid on Juanita's in August 1963, and the buildings were demolished in 1983. A Metro Historical Commission marker unveiled on 7 December 2018 stands at Commerce Street and 7th Avenue North, a few minutes from Lower Broadway. Nashville Queer History's site tells the fuller story, and Nashville Sites has a self-guided LGBTQ driving tour that also takes in the first Pride route.
