The Stonewall Inn at 53 Christopher Street is not merely a bar — it is a monument, in both the emotional and the official legal sense. On 28 June 1969, police raided this bar and its patrons fought back, an act of resistance that catalysed the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement and eventually produced the Pride marches, the legal protections, and the cultural visibility that LGBTQ+ people now have across the Western world. In 2016, President Obama designated the Stonewall Inn and the surrounding area as the first US National Monument dedicated to LGBTQ+ rights — the first of its kind in American history. The bar itself has been through several incarnations since 1969. The current space is a smallish two-room venue: a front bar and a larger back room with a dance floor that runs drag shows and DJ nights most evenings. It is not the biggest or the most elaborately equipped bar in New York. What it is, is irreplaceable. The photographs and archive materials on the walls tell the story of what happened here and what grew from it. The exterior landmark plaques mark it as a point on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors come from around the world specifically to stand on this pavement, and rightly so. Regular events include drag shows, themed dance nights, and community fundraisers. The bar is busy every night of the week; on Pride weekend in June it becomes the gravitational centre of the entire city.

I grew up in the NYC area, but had never been to the Stonewall. I was down for business, and after wrapping up early one day I took the subway down to Christopher St. Got there around 3pm & the bar was relatively full. The bartender was very good at her job, checking in frequently with me & others for refills. It was a quiet, weekday afternoon, but I felt this was ideal for a first time visit. I’ve always known the history of the place, and was happy to make the pilgrimage and give my support to such a legendary establishment. I drank their signature brew, Brooklyn Brewery’s Stonewall Inn IPA. Spent about 2 hours talking with folks from all over. I was hoping they carried bar merch, and was happy to see t-shirts, hoodies, tote bags & ballcaps. I bought a T-shirt. A very welcoming bar. I’ll visit each time I’m in NYC.
Visited NY with some friends from SoCal, we went in expecting more of a gimmicky bar vibe but was pleasantly surprised with the atmosphere. It felt like a very homely-hole in the wall atmosphere. Chuck was our bartender and he was outstanding, fast and efficient, super welcoming. If you were going alone I’d hope you get his shift, he genuinely tries his darndest to connect all those coming here, and I think that’s what made and still makes stonewall what it is, a place for the community to socialize, relax, connect. Came in expecting to get only one drink but we stayed for hours.
My friends and I were all out one night in NYC and, while already having had much to drink, turned a corner and magically found Stonewall Inn. We had no idea it was right there, but as a group of queer people, it genuinely felt like it was inviting us in to feel at home. We all were so shocked to see it right there, and we were amazed at the environment inside. The music was BUMPING and it was cool to see such a historically relevant bar that has been around for so long ALIVE and KICKING. It was packed and full of amazing vibes, kind and fun people, and great music. We didn’t know exactly what to expect, but we hung out there for a while and made some of our favorite memories of our trip. I loved reading the historical board/facts on the inside. They have a little wall dedicated to information about the Stonewall Riots, queer liberation, etc. I was just so impressed with how lovely the experience was. It was such a high-energy and truly lively club, but it also had the aura of love and joy and acceptance, as well as one of honoring the past and encouraging the future. Next time I’m in the city, I hope to return and experience this again!
Friendly LGBTQ bar around West Village area. Two levels inside. Bars and living performing stage on first floor. Some seats and a pool table (?). Second floor entrance fee $5 (Fri night). It’s mostly a dance floor with lounge seats and tables. You can order drinks at the bar. Dancers on the stage all night long. Then main show starts around 1230/1am. I would say the music is mix generations, more towards the new generation tho. Still, great vibes, everyone is dancing and enjoying the dancers’ incredible moves.
What an amazing bar and a beautiful, monumental piece of history. The ambience and the service were both fantastic, 10 out of 10. Very welcoming and prompt. So glad we came here! Will be back again for sure.
