The honest summary: Oakland has no gay sauna, no sex club and no outdoor cruising ground that we could confirm from an independent source in 2026. Most men here meet through apps (Grindr, Scruff and Sniffies) or in the bars. If you want a bathhouse, the nearest is Steamworks in Berkeley, and San Francisco is 12 minutes away on BART.
The law in one line: Cruising itself (looking, talking, arranging to meet) is legal in California. Sexual activity in any public place where others could see it is a misdemeanour under Penal Code 647(a), and park and restroom stings have led to arrests in California before.
Lake Merritt
A few cruising directories list Lakeside Park, on the north shore of Lake Merritt. We couldn't find any independent, current source that backs this up. The park is one of Oakland's busiest public spaces, used by joggers, families and events, and police patrol it. Don't plan a trip around it. If you do meet someone there, keep it to conversation and go somewhere private.
Bathhouses and sex clubs
Oakland has none, and we won't invent one. The closest is Steamworks Berkeley at 2107 4th Street, which its website says is open around the clock. San Francisco has sex clubs such as Eros and the Power Exchange; see our San Francisco pages.
Where men actually meet in Oakland
The bars, mostly. The White Horse Inn on Telegraph Avenue has been a gay bar since 1933. Downtown, Qué Rico and Next Level host the Latin parties, including Club Papi. Fluid510 runs drag and DJ nights, and Town Bar & Lounge is a cocktail room. There's no leather or bear bar in Oakland. For those, people head to San Francisco's SoMa.
Staying safe
- Nothing sexual in public spaces: parks, restrooms or cars.
- When meeting someone from an app, share your location with a friend and meet somewhere public first.
- Car break-ins are common across the Bay Area, so leave nothing visible.

Closed or changed
