Demystifying the Editing Process

Wednesday, 09 September 2026 · 17:00 – 19:00 literary-arts.org, Portland, United States

About the event

This class is designed to demystify the editing process with applicable tools for editing at each stage of your draft. From fiction to creative nonfiction, this workshop offers in-depth looks at different editorial tools to use to help you refine your story and your language. In this four-week workshop, we’ll review practical, applicable revision tools for each stage of the revision process. Then, we’ll practice some of those editing tools on your work in class. Homework includes expanded editing exercises, which we’ll discuss the following week.
Please bring:
● A notebook and at least 3 different colored writing utensils
● For day 1: a printed first page of something you’re working on
Each writer will be sent home with an editing checklist and editing goals for the coming weeks.
Access Program
We want our writing classes and seminars to be accessible to everyone, regardless of income and background. We understand that our tuition structure can present obstacles for some people. Our Access Program offers writing class and seminar tuitions at a reduced rate. Most writing classes have at least one access spot available.
Please apply here for access rate tuition. Contact Susan Moore at susan@literary-arts.org if you have questions.
Liaison position
Every in-person class and seminar at Literary Arts has one liaison position. Liaisons perform specific duties for each class meeting. If you are a liaison for a class or seminar, the full amount of your tuition is covered by Literary Arts.
