About the event

The 1988 film “Hairspray” is Director John Waters love letter to his youth in Baltimore. Set in the early 1960s, the film portrays what was happening in society with racism, segregation, classism, body shaming, lots of dancing, fashion, a local dance party TV show and bouffant wigs. Waters wrote that his all-time favorite review of the film was David Edelstein’s in Rolling Stone magazine that said that Hairspray was “a family movie both the Bradys and the Mansons could adore”.
