Harvey Milk Plaza

The southwest corner of Castro and Market is the Castro's front porch: the entrance to Castro Muni station, dedicated to Harvey Milk in 1985, seven years after his assassination. Its most famous feature arrived in 1997, on the 20th anniversary of Milk's election: a flagpole flying an enormous rainbow flag, visible down the length of Market Street. The symbolism is precise — Gilbert Baker created the rainbow flag in this very neighborhood in 1978, and the flag above the plaza is the neighborhood's declaration of itself. At concourse level, photo panels installed in 2006 trace Milk's life from camera shop to City Hall. The plaza is about to change dramatically. San Francisco voters approved bond funding in November 2024 for a full memorial redesign — plans include a pedestal, a beacon, a grove of eleven trees marking Milk's eleven months in office, and a gallery level. Groundbreaking is expected between late 2026 and spring 2027, with reopening targeted around Pride 2028. What you see today: a functioning transit plaza with the flag, the photo exhibit and constant Castro foot traffic — expect construction closures from late 2026 through 2028, though the corner and the flag remain the neighborhood's gathering point for celebrations and vigils alike. It is the natural first stop of a Castro heritage walk: Castro Camera, Pink Triangle Park, the Rainbow Honor Walk and the GLBT Historical Society Museum are all within three blocks.
