About this place National AIDS Memorial Grove

The National AIDS Memorial Grove fills the de Laveaga Dell, a sunken wooded hollow in the eastern part of Golden Gate Park. Volunteers began restoring it in the early 1990s as a place to remember people lost to AIDS, and Congress later designated it a national memorial. Names are engraved in the stone Circle of Friends, and paths, benches and boulders run through the dell. Entry is free and the park lists it as open 6am to 10pm. It is a quiet, reflective place, so keep voices low. Volunteer workdays and an annual World AIDS Day observance take place here. It is a short walk from the de Young Museum and the Haight.
