Gay Day at the Zoo is an LGBTQ+ community event in Washington DC, celebrating International Family Equality Day.
This is a day for families, whatever that looks like to you. Kids, extended family, chosen family—all are welcome at the zoo, where the vibe is celebratory, and the crowd is overwhelmingly queer. It’s an outdoor party, sure, but it’s also a chance to connect with people who get it, all while checking out the animals.
DC has a strong LGBTQ+ community, and events like this pop up all year. What makes Gay Day at the Zoo stand out is its focus on being truly family-friendly, meaning you’ll see plenty of kids alongside adults. It’s a nice option if you’re traveling with little ones and want to experience a queer community event that isn’t just about the bars.
For exact times, planned activities, or any special programming, you'll want to check the event's Facebook page. If you're in DC, it’s a good way to spend a day and be part of a celebration that really puts LGBTQ+ families front and center.

Loved the giant pandas. The whole place was kept up Nicely and there was a lot to see and do. It is a beautiful zoo and it was nice that it’s free
Free! It was hot the day I went in mid June. Recommend going in the morning or in fall. Start at the top of the hill by pandas and work your way down. Otherwise you are walking up hill the whole time. Purchased ticket online right before entering gate. No cost but they ask for donation.
Very beautiful, great variety of wildlife, everything is very accessible and well-organized.
