The honest summary: Surat is a fast-growing city of about 4.6 million people (2011 census, city limits as extended in 2020) on the Tapi river in south Gujarat. It's rich, busy, heavily vegetarian and dry, and it has no gay bar, no gay club, no gay sauna and no regular queer party night that we could confirm in October 2026. We searched in English, Gujarati and Hindi and checked the international gay guides. A December 2023 guide puts it plainly: "There are no gay bars in the city yet." What Surat does have is history and a small community. It held Gujarat's first Pride march in 2013, a march took place again in 2024, and a local group, Be The Change, keeps queer conversations going on Instagram. Most queer life here happens on apps and in private circles. For a gay night out, Mumbai is about three hours away by Vande Bharat train.
Legal in one line: Consensual sex between adults of the same sex has been legal in India since the Supreme Court read down Section 377 on 6 September 2018 (Navtej Singh Johar v. Union of India), and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the criminal code in force since 1 July 2024, has no equivalent offence. Same-sex marriage and civil unions aren't recognised (Supreme Court, 17 October 2023). Trans people have legal recognition under the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2019, and Gujarat set up a Transgender Welfare Board in 2019.
Gujarat has been under prohibition since the Bombay Prohibition Act of 1949, which the state kept when it was formed in 1960. There are no pubs, cocktail bars or clubs serving alcohol in Surat, so the bar culture that anchors gay scenes in Mumbai, Bengaluru or Delhi has nothing to grow from. Nightlife in Surat means food streets, cafés, malls, the riverfront and, in autumn, Navratri garba.
Some websites list Surat "gay-friendly" clubs, hookah lounges and hotels (Neon, Club Infinity, Hard Rock The Disc, the Marriott, Lords Plaza and others). None of them offers any evidence of queer nights or an LGBTQ+ crowd. They're mainstream places, and we don't list them as gay.

If you want a drink, you need a permit. According to a 2025 guide to Gujarat's liquor rules, foreign passport holders can get a free tourist permit valid for up to a month, and visitors from other Indian states can get a visitor's permit for a week (₹20 application plus ₹200), which can be extended to a month. Both are issued through the state's e-permit portal or at authorised liquor shops inside large hotels, where you show your passport or ID, then buy a fixed quota. The drink is for private consumption, normally in your hotel room. Drinking without a permit can mean up to six months in jail for a first offence, and police do raid private parties. The GIFT City exemption that lets outsiders drink with just a photo ID applies only near Gandhinagar, not in Surat. Rules change, so ask your hotel before you rely on any of this.
There's no gay sauna or cruising club in Surat. Massage parlours advertising "male to male" services aren't gay saunas, and we don't list them. We also don't list outdoor cruising areas anywhere in India. The dating-app robberies described below show how risky isolated meet-ups can be.
Be The Change (@bethechange_surat on Instagram, about 2,300 followers) describes itself as a group "empowering LGBTQ+ in Surat". It has posted about panel discussions, Surat Pride 2024 and a 2023 fashion show, and it was still active in June 2026. It has no office or public phone, so a direct message is the way in.
Lakshya Trust, Gujarat's largest community organisation for gay and bisexual men and trans people, is based in Vadodara and has run HIV and STI outreach in Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot. It co-organised Vadodara Pride in 2025. Its Surat contact number dates from 2020-21 and may be out of date, and we couldn't confirm that its Surat drop-in centre is still running, so we haven't given it a listing here. In May 2023, the Umeed Foundation organised a transgender fashion show in Surat, which press reports called Gujarat's first. We found nothing from Umeed since then.
Surat's place in queer history is real. On 6 October 2013, the city hosted Gujarat's first Pride march, organised by Swagat Shah. About 150 people from Surat, Ahmedabad, Baroda and Mumbai walked roughly 3 km from the New Civil Court to Kargil Chowk, as reported by Deccan Herald and The Diplomat. Wikipedia and Be The Change's own posts record another march in Surat in 2024, though we couldn't find its date or route. We found no march in 2025 or 2026, and no Pride events at Surat's malls or hotels. Elsewhere in Gujarat, Vadodara held Pride in 2025, Ahmedabad's community group QueerAbad runs talks and events, and Gandhinagar has hosted Pride walks since 2020. No 2027 date had been announced for Surat when we checked in October 2026; Be The Change's Instagram is the place to watch.
Most visitors base themselves in one of three areas. Athwalines, Piplod, Vesu and Dumas Road in the south-west are the newer, greener side of the city with the malls and the airport road. Here you'll find the Surat Marriott (the former Gateway Hotel, on the Tapi), Le Méridien (the former TGB at Magdalla, close to the airport), and the budget Ginger near Iscon Mall. Adajan, across the river, has the Park Inn by Radisson. The station area and the Ring Road suit train travellers: Ginger City Centre, Lords Plaza and Click Hotel Yuvraj are all within walking distance of the platforms. The World, an all-suite hotel opened in 2024, is out east in Magob, and Courtyard by Marriott is on the Hazira road. Biznotel by Pride, in a Jahangirpura mall, belongs to an Indian hotel chain called Pride; the name has nothing to do with LGBTQ+ Pride. None of these hotels markets itself to LGBTQ+ guests, and none is a gay venue.
Surat International Airport (STV) is on Dumas Road, about 11 to 13 km south-west of the centre. It gained international status in December 2023. This winter it has flights to Dubai and Sharjah, and Air India Express starts a daily Bangkok service from 25 October 2026, as well as domestic flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and other cities. Surat railway station is on the main Mumbai–Ahmedabad line, and the Vande Bharat from Mumbai Central takes about three hours. The Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train isn't running yet; its first section, Surat to Bilimora, is targeted for August 2027. The first stretch of the Surat Metro (Dream City to Althan) was expected around the end of November 2026 but wasn't open when we checked. Until then, use Uber, Ola, auto-rickshaws or the BRTS and Sitilink buses.
Surat cuts and polishes about 90 per cent of the world's diamonds. The Surat Diamond Bourse, opened in December 2023, was named by Guinness as the world's largest office building, though reports say much of it stands empty after the 2025 downturn in the diamond trade. In the old city, Surat Castle (built 1540-46) reopened in 2022 after restoration. It's closed on Mondays, and foreigners pay ₹500. Gopi Talav, the Sardar Patel Museum, the Dutch and Armenian cemeteries and Dumas beach are other easy outings. The food is the real reason many Indians visit: try locho for breakfast, undhiyu in winter and ghari, a rich sweet that's eaten on Chandni Padvo, the day after Sharad Purnima in October. Navratri garba, which UNESCO added to its intangible heritage list in 2023, takes over the city for nine nights each autumn. Uttarayan kite flying fills the rooftops on 14 and 15 January.
Surat is generally considered a low-crime city, but it's socially conservative, and there's no visible gay space. The main risk is dating-app crime. In June 2026 in Varachha, a gang used a fake profile on the POLO gay dating app to lure men to an under-construction building, then robbed them of cash and phones and forced UPI transfers. Varachha police arrested two men and detained a minor in early August 2026, after at least three men had been targeted in 15 days. A similar gang was caught in Surendranagar the same year. Meet new contacts only in busy public places, such as a mall food court or a hotel lobby café, never in isolated spots or half-built buildings. Don't let anyone pressure you into a payment, and call 112 in an emergency. Public displays of affection between men or between women will draw stares, so keep it low-key.
