Buenos Aires keeps late hours. Dinner starts at ten, the previa (pre-drinks) runs past midnight, and on Avenida Corrientes the pizzerias and bookshops are still lit when the buses rattle past at two in the morning. Under that bustle sits a cruising scene that lives mostly below street level: unmarked doors, a flight of stairs, a bar at the front and a maze of dark corridors at the back. The city has a few men's cruise bars, a couple of large saunas in Almagro and a regular calendar of fetish and naked parties. Some old names have gone, the porn cinemas of the centre have faded, and nearly everyone also uses Grindr. Here is what was running in 2026, and what has closed.

Legal in one line: sex between men has been legal in Argentina for well over a century, the country became the first in Latin America to legalise same-sex marriage in 2010, and its 2012 gender identity law is one of the world's most progressive. Cruise bars and saunas are legal private venues for adults. Sex in public is a different matter: see the box on the law and safety below.

How cruising works in Buenos Aires

The porteños (people from Buenos Aires) call it levante: the pick-up. Most of it now starts on Grindr, but the city still has a set of indoor venues where you pay at a window, get a drink and walk through to the dark. The cruise bars are in the centre and Recoleta, within a short taxi ride of each other, and the two big saunas are in Almagro, near the Club Amerika dance club. The cruise bars open in the afternoon or early evening and fill late, especially on Friday and Saturday nights; the saunas are busiest in the late afternoon and early evening. Bring pesos in cash and leave your valuables at the hotel.

Cruise bars and darkrooms

Zoom · José Evaristo Uriburu 1018, Recoleta

Zoom calls itself a multiespacio de encuentro (a multi-space meeting place) for the gay community. It's a basement venue with a lounge bar at the front and, at the back, a dark maze of corridors, private rooms and cubicles with screens and glory holes, as described by Travel Gay and Two Bad Tourists. Its own website lists it as open every day of the year: Monday to Thursday 15:00–03:00, Friday and Saturday 15:00–08:00 and Sunday 16:00–03:00; other guides give slightly different times, so check its Instagram (@zoombuenosaires) or phone +54 11 4803-5944. There's no sign on the street. Reviewers describe a mixed-age crowd that skews older on weekdays, with younger men at weekends; a 2024 visitor found it quiet on a Tuesday evening and expected it to be packed on Friday and Saturday nights. The door price isn't published, so ask at the window.

Zafiro · Paraná 571, Centro

Zafiro (Zafiro Friendly Lounge) works as a bar in the early evening and a cruising venue later on. Nomadic Boys and Two Bad Tourists describe a front bar with drink promotions, then cabins, darkrooms, glory holes, a cruising tunnel and a smoking patio. Listings give Tuesday to Sunday from 18:00 to about 02:00, later at weekends (one guide says until 04:00, another until 06:00), and open-bar deals on some weekend nights. Check its social media for the week's offers before you go.

Boy's Bar (Los Fiesteros) · Carlos Pellegrini 1083

Boy's Bar is inside a small galería (shopping arcade) on Carlos Pellegrini, one of the side roads of Avenida 9 de Julio. It's run by the party group Los Fiesteros, and it's the kinkiest of the three: darkrooms, a labyrinth, a red room, showers, private cells and glory holes, plus a bar and a live DJ. Nomadic Boys listed Friday and Sunday 19:00–01:00 and Saturday 21:00–04:00 in 2025. This is also where the city's regular fetish parties happen: Travel Gay lists black-and-white nights, naked parties, underwear parties and orgies at the same address, with details posted on its Facebook page. Check the night's dress code before you go.

Where to start the night

None of these are cruise bars, but they're good places for a drink first. Contramano, at Rodríguez Peña 1082, is an old-school bar that GayCities says opened in 1984. Puticlú, a queer punk bar in Retiro, has what Two Bad Tourists calls a "sneaky darkroom". For dancing, the full list is in our Buenos Aires bars guide.

The saunas

Both of the city's main men's saunas are in Almagro, west of the centre, and both include darkrooms and video rooms, so cruising is part of the deal. Details and the full list are on our Buenos Aires saunas page.

Homo Sapiens · Gascón 956, Almagro

A large sauna next to the Club Amerika dance club. Spartacus describes about 1,200 m² with a dry sauna, steam bath, relax room, a bar, a terrace, massage, a big cinema with a large screen, a maze, a darkroom and glory holes. Two Bad Tourists, updated in July 2026, adds cubicles and a video room and says it draws an older crowd. Listings give daily 12:00 to midnight. A 2023 Tripadvisor reviewer complained about a group of men hanging around the smoking area, so judge the atmosphere for yourself. Phone +54 11 4862 6519 for the current price.

Madison Club de Hombres · Avenida Medrano 1047, Almagro

A men's sauna over three floors with a pool, dry and wet saunas, a large hot tub, a darkroom, a small adult cinema and a sling room, according to Rainbow Index, which last updated its listing in April 2025. It lists afternoon opening from 13:00 to 22:00 from Tuesday to Sunday, with shorter hours on Mondays. The same listing warns that theft from lockers has been reported, so take as little as possible. The crowd is mostly local.

Porn cinemas

Downtown Buenos Aires once had a string of cines condicionados (adult cinemas) along Lavalle, Suipacha and Esmeralda, many with gay screens and cruising in the dark. Internet porn and repeated inspections have emptied most of them. The best known, the ABC at Esmeralda 506, was closed by the city's inspection agency in May 2016 and again in December 2019, when Infobae reported unhygienic conditions. We couldn't confirm that any gay adult cinema was operating normally in 2026; see the box below.

Closed or uncertain:

    • Tom's (Viamonte 638, basement), the cruise bar near Calle Florida with a maze, glory holes and a leather basement, is marked closed by GayCities. Spartacus still lists it, but we found no recent sign that it's trading.
    • Unikus (Avenida Pueyrredón 1180, 2nd floor, Recoleta), a long-running sauna with a mature crowd, was reported temporarily closed in May 2024 by Rainbow Index. Phone before going.
    • A Full (Viamonte 1770, near Córdoba and Callao) was a sauna with a gym, wet and dry saunas, a jacuzzi, a labyrinth and cabins; we found no 2025–2026 confirmation that it still operates as a sauna.
    • ABC (Esmeralda 506), the four-screen gay adult cinema, was closed by the city in 2016 and 2019; a 2023 comment suggested it had reopened, but we couldn't confirm it.
    • Cine Ideal on Suipacha, the 1930s picture palace that later became a porn cinema and gay meeting place, was last described that way in a 2009 press report; its current status is unclear.

    Outdoors and in public

Like any big city, Buenos Aires has parks, riverside walks and public toilets with long reputations among men looking for each other, and old guides still list some of them. We don't send you to any of them: they are busy public spaces used by families, joggers and tourists, and after dark the risks below are real. The city has legal, licensed alternatives open every day of the week.

    The law and your safety:

    • National law: under Article 129 of Argentina's Penal Code, anyone who performs obscene exhibitions that others may see involuntarily commits an offence punishable by a fine, and by six months to four years in prison if minors are involved.
    • City law: the Buenos Aires Código Contravencional (Ley 1.472) punishes acoso sexual (sexual harassment) in public places or places open to the public under Article 67, with 2 to 10 days of community work, a fine or 1 to 5 days' arrest, doubled if two or more people are involved. Article 86 punishes openly offering or asking for sexual services in non-authorised public spaces, and adds that the offence can never be based on someone's appearance, clothes or manner.
    • Robbery: quiet paths, dark car parks and strangers' flats are where thieves look for people who won't go to the police. Carry only your phone, one card and a little cash, and don't follow anyone into a dark corner.
    • App dates: meet first in a bar or café, tell a friend where you're going, and share your location. Never let a stranger see your PIN or unlock your phone for them.
    • Police: if the Policía de la Ciudad approach you, stay calm, be polite and show your ID. Carry a copy of your passport.
    • Emergency: call 911 for the police and 107 for an ambulance (SAME) in the city.

    Telos: the porteño solution

If you meet someone and neither of you can host, do what porteños have done for generations and go to a telo: an albergue transitorio, a hotel that rents rooms by the turno, a block of a few hours. The word is hotel with its syllables swapped, in the vesre slang of the city. Telos are legal, discreet, found in every neighbourhood and a normal part of life here, with themed rooms, jacuzzis and room service in the fancier ones. They are a much safer choice than a park.

A Buenos Aires night, the local way

Start with a picada of cheese and cold cuts and a fernet con coca, the bitter herbal liqueur topped with cola that Argentines drink at every previa. Dinner is late: a steak at a parrilla, or a slab of thick, cheesy pizza standing at the counter of one of the old pizzerias on Corrientes, with a glass of moscato and a slice of fainá (chickpea flatbread) on top. Street food after midnight means a choripán, a grilled chorizo in bread with chimichurri. If you're still out at dawn, finish with medialunas, the small, sweet Argentine croissants, and a café con leche at a corner café.

    Practical tips

    • Cash: carry pesos in small notes for entry fees and the bar. Prices change quickly with inflation, so we don't quote them; ask at the window. Foreign cards now usually get a fair exchange rate where they're accepted.
    • Getting around: buy a SUBE card for the Subte (metro) and the colectivos (buses). The Subte stops running around midnight, but many bus lines run all night; at night, a taxi or a ride-hailing app such as Uber or Cabify from door to door is the easiest choice.
    • Lockers: use them, take a padlock if you have one, and leave passports and spare cards at the hotel; locker theft has been reported at the saunas.
    • Phones and photos: no photos inside cruise spaces, ever.
    • Apps: Grindr is the main app in Argentina.
    • Consent: "no" is enough, in any room, at any time.
    • Health: if a condom breaks, PEP must start within 72 hours: go to the guardia (emergency department) of a public hospital. HIV testing and treatment are free in Argentina's public health system.
    • Chems: if GHB/GBL is around, never mix it with alcohol and never dose for someone else. Call 107 in an emergency.

    Pride

The Marcha del Orgullo, Buenos Aires Pride, is held on a Saturday in early November. The 2025 march took place on Saturday 1 November 2025. The 2026 march is planned for Saturday 7 November 2026. It traditionally starts with a fair and music in Plaza de Mayo during the day and marches along Avenida de Mayo to the Congreso in the afternoon. Check the organisers' website and our Buenos Aires Pride page nearer the time. Expect the cruise bars, saunas and parties to be at their busiest that weekend.

A few words of porteño Spanish

    • ¿Cuánto sale la entrada? – how much is entry?
    • Casillero – locker. Toalla – towel. Efectivo – cash.
    • Levante – a pick-up; levantar – to pick someone up.
    • Chongo – a masculine guy, or a casual hookup.
    • Telo – a rent-by-the-hour hotel; turno – the block of time you pay for.
    • Cine condicionado – adult cinema.
    • Forro – condom (also a common insult, so mind the context).
    • Boliche – nightclub. Previa – pre-drinks.
    • No, gracias – no, thanks. Always enough.
    • Che – hey, mate; you'll hear it in every sentence.

Frequently asked questions

Where is gay cruising in Buenos Aires?

Mostly indoors, in a handful of men's cruise bars and saunas. Zoom on Uriburu in Recoleta, Zafiro on Paraná and Boy's Bar on Carlos Pellegrini all have darkrooms and mazes, while Homo Sapiens and Madison in Almagro are the men's saunas. Most men also use Grindr, and many take a hookup to a telo, the city's rent-by-the-hour hotels.

Is Zoom in Buenos Aires open in 2026?

As far as we can tell, yes. Its own website gives daily opening from the afternoon, until 03:00 from Sunday to Thursday and until 08:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and travel guides updated in 2025 and 2026 still list it. Check its Instagram, @zoombuenosaires, before you go.

Are there gay saunas in Buenos Aires?

Yes. Homo Sapiens at Gascón 956 and Madison Club de Hombres at Avenida Medrano 1047, both in Almagro, are men's saunas with steam rooms, darkrooms and bars. Unikus in Recoleta was reported temporarily closed in 2024, so phone before going there.

Is outdoor cruising legal in Buenos Aires?

Being gay in a park is legal; sex in public is not. Obscene acts that others may see without wanting to are an offence under Article 129 of Argentina's Penal Code, and the city's Código Contravencional punishes sexual harassment in public places. Robbery is the bigger everyday risk, so the cruise bars and saunas are the safer choice.

When is Buenos Aires Pride 2026?

The Marcha del Orgullo is planned for Saturday 7 November 2026, and it traditionally runs along Avenida de Mayo from Plaza de Mayo to the Congreso. The 2025 march was held on Saturday 1 November. Expect the cruise bars and saunas to be at their busiest that weekend.
