Last verified: October 2026. Buenos Aires has one gay hotel left, and it is a six-room men-only bed and breakfast on an antiques street in San Telmo. The Axel, the hotel most guides still send you to, closed in 2013; its building on Venezuela 649 is a backpacker hostel with the Axel rooftop pool still on the roof. Everything else is mainstream and friendly, which in this city means genuinely friendly: same-sex marriage since 2010, self-declared gender identity since 2012, a Pride march that fills the Avenida de Mayo every November with the city government's blessing. What has changed since 2024 is the politics above the scene (a president who calls gender ideology child abuse, a national HIV budget cut by a third) and the money (the blue-dollar gap is now one per cent, so bring cards). This guide gives the honest list, real walking minutes to three separate gay poles, who closed, the 21 per cent hotel VAT you do not pay, the Pride week of 7 November 2026 and the papal visit that collides with it, how to get in from Ezeiza while the runway is half shut, and where PEP is at four in the morning.

Where to sleep, in real minutes

Gay Buenos Aires is not one street. It has three poles about two and a half kilometres apart, and the hotel you choose decides which one you walk to and which two you take an Uber to (ARS 6,000–9,000, about four to six dollars, between any two of them). Our listings carry a "nearest gay venue" line and a distance to the centre of the whole scene; because the scene is spread out, the centre lands in Barrio Norte near Glam and means little. Trust the nearest-venue line and the minutes below.

Palermo Soho is the bar pole. Peuteo on Gurruchaga 1867 (Wednesday to Sunday from 19:00, a video bar that is gay first and friendly second) is the room everyone passes through; Maricafé on Honduras 4096 is café, bookshop and bar from morning to late; Sitges on Córdoba is the old-school dance bar with drag shows; Jolie roams; Club 69 takes over Niceto Club in Hollywood on Thursdays. Legado Mítico is 35 metres from Peuteo, Nuss 280, Mine and the Coppola villa about 420, 1828 Smart 420, Duque 500, Play Hostel 740. Home Hotel, Own Grand and Vitrum are two to four minutes from Niceto and ten to fifteen from Peuteo; Fierro, Hotel Clásico and CasaSur fifteen.

Almagro and Villa Crespo are the late pole: Amerika on Gascón 1040 (Thursday to Sunday from midnight to about seven, three floors, the biggest gay club in South America by its own claim, mixed by the end of the night), the saunas HomoSapiens on Gascón 956 and Madison on Medrano 1047, Feliza on Córdoba 3271 (the queer cultural bar with the best weeknight programme) and Casa Brandon on Drago 236. Le Petit Palais is the only hotel in this guide that is walkable to all of it (Feliza six minutes, Amerika twelve). From Soho it is a twelve-minute Uber or three stops on Subte B.

Recoleta, Barrio Norte and the Centro are the cruise-bar pole and the oldest one. Contramano on Rodríguez Peña 1082 has been open since 1984 and is bear-leaning and over-thirty-five at weekends; Zoom on Uriburu 1018 is the men-only cruise lounge with cabins, afternoons to late; Glam on Cabrera 3046 is the Friday and Saturday club for the under-thirties; KM Zero on Azcuénaga does late drag and go-go; A Full on Viamonte 1770 is the central sauna (daily, ARS 10,000 cash, no longer 24 hours); Zafiro on Paraná and Tom's on Viamonte are the darkroom bars of the Centro. Up Laprida is ten minutes from Glam and Contramano, Mio and Algodon Mansion twelve from Contramano, the Alvear and the Duhau fourteen, the Four Seasons eight to Boys Bar and fifteen to Contramano. Tango de Mayo is five minutes from Haven and ten from A Full.

San Telmo has Pride Café, now on the Avenida de Mayo, La Greco and the women-only María on Perú, and the Tuesday queer milonga at the Buenos Aires Club on Perú 571. Lugar Gay is ten minutes from Perú, Viajero three. Both are twenty to twenty-five minutes by taxi from Palermo at night, which is the real cost of sleeping in San Telmo.

Men only, gay-owned, or merely friendly: the honest list

Lugar Gay, Defensa 1120. The only men-only accommodation in the city and, as far as we can find, in Argentina. Six rooms over three floors of an 1890s house, breakfast included, a roof terrace with a hot tub and a view over the San Telmo rooftops, hosts Javier and Santo who know every bar, a queer-tango class on Friday evenings in the salon. The rooms are basic and some are dark; the staircase is long and steep; there is a no-outside-drinks rule; there is no pool. Guests love it or find it tired, in roughly the same proportion they did ten years ago, which is itself a kind of reliability. Rates are not published online in 2026 and the website has an expired certificate, so email or use the aggregators. It sits on the Sunday fair route: on Sundays you step out of the door into the crowd.

Le Petit Palais, Gorriti 3574. Gay-owned, French in style, a handful of rooms around a leafy terrace, breakfast made by the host, three cats in residence. Not men-only; women and straight friends are welcome. It is the one gay-owned place within walking distance of Feliza, Amerika and the Almagro saunas.

Home Hotel, Honduras 5860. Not gay-owned, but the hotel every gay guide names first, with reason: a long garden with a pool, a spa, a good bar, suites with jacuzzis, Palermo Hollywood's restaurants on the doorstep and Club 69 three minutes away. Mixed crowd, gay-comfortable, about US$200–300.

Legado Mítico, Gurruchaga 1848. Eleven rooms each named after an Argentine myth (Evita, Che, the gaucho, the tango singer), a garden patio, no pool, no restaurant, about US$160–215, guests twelve and over. It is thirty metres from Peuteo; if your trip is about the Soho bars, this is the bed.

The Soho pool hotels. Nuss (rooftop pool, five minutes from Peuteo), Own Grand (rooftop pool, Soho–Hollywood border), Mine (courtyard pool, US$140–200) and Be Jardín Escondido, Francis Ford Coppola's seven-suite villa with a garden pool at about US$400. Duque adds a small spa and a plunge pool; 1828 Smart is the cheaper no-pool option seven minutes from the bars. All mixed, all fine.

The Hollywood design hotels. Fierro (rooftop pool, good restaurant, US$170–230), Vitrum (the colour-block hotel GayCities has listed for years), Hotel Clásico (roof terrace, no pool, US$120–170), CasaSur Palermo (four-star with spa). Awwa Suites on Lafinur and Flor de Lino on Paraguay are the quieter Palermo-proper options near the Botanical Garden.

Recoleta. Up Laprida is adults-only, 35 rooms, three-star, spa baths in the superior rooms, often under US$60, and the closest bed to Glam, Contramano and Zoom. Mio has carved-wood tubs, an indoor spa pool and a giant jacuzzi a block from the cemetery. Algodon Mansion is ten suites and a rooftop pool in a 1912 house. Esplendor Plaza Francia is the four-star bargain, often under US$120, no pool. The grand three, Palacio Duhau (indoor pool, terraced garden, about US$500), Alvear Palace (rooftop indoor pool, US$370–510) and the Four Seasons (garden pool behind a belle-époque mansion, US$450–530), are all a ten- to fifteen-minute walk from Contramano and have hosted same-sex weddings for fifteen years without comment. MONS, opposite the cemetery, is the Recoleta hostel: 90 beds, 18+, rated 9.0.

Centro, Congreso, San Telmo, Puerto Madero. Tango de Mayo is the Pride-week hotel, on the march route, rooftop terrace, about US$90–130, rated above 9. Viajero is the Axel building as a hostel (see below). Faena is Philippe Starck's hotel in a converted grain silo in Puerto Madero, with an outdoor pool whose weekend crowd is noticeably gay and a tango show; about US$475. The Alvear Icon and the Hilton have rooftop pools over the docks; Puerto Madero is safe, well lit and a taxi from every bar in this guide.

Apartments. Short-term rentals must be on the city register (Ley 6255) and foreign guests pay US$1.50 a night through the platform; the rules bind the host, not you. misterb&b's inventory is mostly Palermo studios and a five-room shared house; book five to seven weeks ahead for Pride week.

Who changed

Axel Hotel Buenos Aires closed on 1 October 2013. Axel ran the Venezuela 649 property for five years, then it became Be Trimos, and since 2016 it has been Viajero Buenos Aires Hostel: the rooftop pool is still there, so is the outdoor pool, the bar is now Casa Jaguar, the rooms are dorms and privates for 18-and-over. Aggregators still sell "Axel Buenos Aires from $165"; GayCities marks it closed; we had it listed as open until this guide. If a site tells you Buenos Aires has a gay hotel chain property, it is thirteen years out of date.

Che Lulu Guesthouse on Emilio Zola, the gay-owned backpacker house for twenty years, appears to be gone: its domain is for sale, Kayak lists a Zola Hostel at the address, no review since 2023. Bayres B&B on Córdoba has no live listing anywhere. We have removed both. Work Bar on Gurruchaga, Peuteo's neighbour, is marked permanently closed. Flux and Bach Bar closed in 2024–25. Pride Café moved from Balcarce in San Telmo to the Avenida de Mayo. Tom's on Viamonte has relaunched as Tanque according to its reviewers. Circuit BA and the White Party, the two circuit brands that gave Pride weekend an international crowd, have had no edition since 2024–25; treat them as dead until someone announces otherwise.

In the other direction: Faena and Le Petit Palais were wrongly archived in our listings and are back; sixteen hotels in Palermo, Recoleta and Puerto Madero that gay visitors actually book have been added with pins checked against the street grid.

Rules, fees and bringing someone back

The 21 per cent you do not pay. Foreign tourists are exempt from VAT (IVA) on hotel accommodation and breakfast when they pay with a foreign-issued card or an international transfer, show a passport with an entry stamp, and stay under ninety days (IVA law article 43, Decree 1043/2016, still in force in October 2026). It is applied at billing; you do not file anything. Pay cash in pesos and you pay the tax. Check the quoted rate: aggregators show prices with or without IVA inconsistently, so a hotel that looks 21 per cent dearer may be the same price.

Money in 2026. The peso floats inside a band; the official rate is about ARS 1,550 to the dollar, the blue 1,565, and the gap, which was 100 per cent in 2023, is now about one per cent. Foreign cards settle at the official rate. There is no reason left to carry a brick of hundred-dollar bills; bring one or two hundred in cash for tips, SUBE top-ups and the saunas (A Full is cash only), and use cards everywhere else. Inflation runs about 2 per cent a month, so any peso price in this guide is stale by the time you land; dollar equivalents are what to remember. Watch for forged 10,000 and 20,000-peso notes in taxi change.

Visitors. No hotel in the city publishes a guest policy, and in the boutique hotels the practice is simple: everyone who sleeps is registered with ID, nobody is charged extra, nobody asks questions. Hostels (Viajero, MONS, Play) bar non-guests from the dorms. Lugar Gay has historically been guests-only in the rooms; ask the hosts. Zoom, A Full, HomoSapiens and Madison solve the problem differently.

Your rights. Marriage equality (Law 26.618, 2010), gender identity by self-declaration (Law 26.743, 2012), a city anti-discrimination law and a Pride march the city co-organises. Under President Milei the federal picture has darkened: the anti-discrimination institute INADI was dissolved in August 2024, the Davos speech of January 2025 described gender ideology as child abuse and put two million people on the streets in a Marcha Antifascista, a decree barring gender-affirming treatment for minors was suspended by the courts in July 2026, and a bill to repeal the Gender Identity Law has been announced and not passed. None of this changes what you can do in Palermo, Recoleta or on the Avenida de Mayo; it changes the graffiti, the slogans and the 2026 Pride motto, "El orgullo al poder, el odio al carajo". Hand-holding in Palermo, Recoleta, San Telmo and the Centro is unremarkable. Cannabis is still illegal to possess; private personal use is not prosecuted after a 2009 Supreme Court ruling; do not carry into clubs, which search bags.

Pride, Asterisco and the week that matters

Marcha del Orgullo, Saturday 7 November 2026. The 35th march, from the Plaza de Mayo up the Avenida de Mayo to Congreso: the feria and the stage from midday, the reading of the document around five, the floats from Amerika, Glam and Feliza moving off around four and arriving at Congreso by dark, a free closing concert (María Becerra in 2026). Several hundred thousand people; the city puts it at more. It is the end of a Semana del Orgullo that starts on 31 October. Afterwards everyone goes to Amerika's post-march party from midnight, to Fiesta Plop at GEBA in Palermo, or to Peuteo if they live in Soho. Sleep on or near the route (Tango de Mayo, the Viajero, Lugar Gay) if you want to walk to it, or in Palermo if you want to walk home afterwards.

Two collisions in 2026. Pope Leo XIV visits Argentina from 8 to 11 November, with a national holiday on Monday 9 and a city holiday on Tuesday 10; the city first tried to ban public events that week and agreed on 25 September to keep the Pride date. Expect sold-out central hotels from 6 to 11 November, closed streets around the Plaza de Mayo and the cathedral on the Sunday, and a rush at Ezeiza. The second collision is the runway: Ezeiza's main runway is under repair from 25 October to 11 November 2026 and wide-body aircraft are restricted, so United, American, Delta, Lufthansa and LATAM's Miami flights have cancelled or rerouted through Montevideo, Santiago and São Paulo. If you are flying in for Pride, check your booking now, not at the airport. The Boca–River Superclásico is Sunday 1 November at 15:00 in La Boca; the city is tense that evening, and La Boca is not a place to be a stranger after dark.

Asterisco, the international LGBTIQ+ film festival, runs 22 October to 1 November 2026 (13th edition) at MALBA, the Museo del Cine, Fundación PROA in La Boca, the Universidad del Cine in San Telmo and Hasta Trilce in Almagro; most screenings are free. It leads straight into Pride week. La Noche de los Museos is Saturday 14 November 2026, 19:00 to 02:00, 250 venues, free. The 2027 march is Saturday 6 November 2027.

The rest of the calendar. Summer is December to February, 30 degrees and humid; the city empties in January and many restaurants shut from 31 December to 2 January, though the clubs run New Year parties. Carnaval 2027 is Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 February, with murga parades in the barrios the weekends before. Ultra Buenos Aires returns 2–3 April 2027. BAFICI, the independent film festival, is mid-to-late April. Semana Santa 2027 makes a five-day weekend from 24 to 28 March. The Tango festival and world championship fill the second half of August; the queer milongas (La Marshall in Almagro, Tango Queer on Tuesdays at the Buenos Aires Club on Perú 571, La Fuga monthly at El Batacazo) run all year, and Lugar Gay's Friday class is the gentlest way in. Hotel occupancy in 2026 has been weak outside the big weeks, averaging under half in winter; outside Pride, Christmas, Carnaval and Easter, ask for a better rate and you will usually get one.

Three picks per budget

Under US$80. Up Laprida if you want Recoleta and the cruise bars; Viajero (private room) if you want a rooftop pool and San Telmo; Play Hostel Arcos or MONS for a social hostel in Soho or Recoleta. Lugar Gay probably lands here too; ask.

US$120–250. Legado Mítico for the bars at the door; Mine or Fierro for a pool; Tango de Mayo for Pride week.

US$300 and up. Home Hotel for the gay-guide classic with the garden pool; Palacio Duhau or the Alvear Palace for Recoleta grandeur within walking distance of Contramano; Faena for Starck, the pool crowd and a taxi to everything.

Getting in late and getting around

Ezeiza (EZE) to the city. Thirty-five kilometres, 45 to 75 minutes. Uber, Cabify and DiDi all pick up at the airport (follow the in-app point outside Terminal A; expect ARS 35,000–40,000, US$23–26, to Palermo or Recoleta); the prepaid Taxi Ezeiza counter in arrivals is the official taxi at roughly ARS 46,000–50,000 including tolls; never take a tout in the hall. The Manuel Tienda León bus runs to its Retiro terminal on Carlos Pellegrini 971 for ARS 16,500–18,000 (about an hour, then a short taxi). Ride-hailing has no city regulation and a court ruled in May 2026 that the city must write one; the apps keep operating and airport pickups are routine. Aeroparque (AEP), for domestic flights and Uruguay, Brazil and Chile, is fifteen minutes and ARS 12,000–18,000 from Palermo.

In town. Buy a SUBE card at any kiosk or station (cash) and register it in the app: the subte is ARS 1,817 a ride (US$1.20) registered, the bus ARS 920; fares rise every month. The subte runs about 05:30–23:30 on weekdays, to midnight on Saturdays, 08:00–22:30 on Sundays, with no night service; the buses run all night; after midnight use Uber, Cabify, DiDi or the BA Taxi app, and pay licensed black-and-yellow taxis in small notes. Palermo to Amerika or Contramano is ten minutes by car, to San Telmo twenty to twenty-five. Ecobici bikes are free for tourists who register in the app with a passport scan. The ferries to Colonia (Buquebus from Dársena Norte, Colonia Express from Dársena Sur) take 75 minutes; carry your passport.

Safety. The signature crime is the arrebato: a phone snatched from your hand at a corner, sometimes by a motorbike, in daylight, in Palermo. Phone away when you stop walking, bag across the body, no watch worth grabbing, do not resist. Distraction thefts (the mustard or bird-dropping trick) work the Florida pedestrian street and the San Telmo fair. Palermo and Recoleta are the safest areas to walk home; avoid Constitución station, Once, Plaza Miserere, the Paseo Colón underpasses and La Boca beyond the Caminito after dark; the Microcentro empties after eight on weekdays, so cab in to Zafiro and Tom's rather than wander. City police stand outside Amerika and Glam at closing time. No gay venue has been attacked since the Maricafé arson of January 2022.

Health

PEP is free by law (Law 27.675) within 72 hours, ideally within 24, at any public hospital emergency department: the nearest to the Palermo hotels is Hospital Fernández, Cerviño 3356, ten minutes from Palermo Soho, with a 24-hour infectious-diseases emergency service; Ramos Mejía on Urquiza 609 and Muñiz on Uspallata 2272 also dispense it. Since August 2026 national hospitals bill non-residents for scheduled care but not emergencies, and the city does the same; PEP is treated as an emergency in practice, but you may be asked for insurance or to pay for the drugs, so carry your policy details. PrEP exists in the public system but you cannot enrol in a two-week trip, and the 2026 budget cut the national HIV programme by about 38 per cent with shortages of antiretrovirals and tests reported; bring your own supply with its box. Testing is free and anonymous at any CeSAC health centre (CeSAC 38 on Medrano 350 in Almagro is near the saunas) and at Nexo, Callao 339, 5th floor, the long-running gay men's health group. Private hospitals Alemán (Pueyrredón 1640), Británico and Italiano take walk-ins with travel insurance. Farmacity has 24-hour branches across Palermo, Recoleta and the Centro. The national HIV line is 0800-3333-444.

Dengue hit a record in 2024 and was very low in 2025–26; the season is January to April, so use repellent at dusk on the Costanera and in the Reserva Ecológica. Tap water is safe. Chemsex is present in the Buenos Aires scene (a 2026 study of PrEP users at Ramos Mejía found a high prevalence); the clubs search bags, and GHB dosing accidents end up at Fernández.

Buenos Aires in a paragraph

The first gay group in Latin America, Nuestro Mundo, was founded here in November 1967, which is why Pride is in November and not June; the first march, in June 1992, was 250 people, many in masks, walking from the cathedral to Congress; marriage equality came in 2010, before any other country on the continent; the gender identity law of 2012 remains the most liberal anywhere. The city is Paris-sized, grid-planned, flat, caffeinated and loud, with a parrilla on every second corner (a 400-gram bife de chorizo at La Cabrera is about US$45; at a neighbourhood grill with a bottle of Malbec, half that), a milonga every night, a bookshop in a theatre, Evita's vault in the Recoleta cemetery, the Sunday fair down Defensa, fernet con coca as the national cocktail, and a conversation about the dollar rate that never ends even now that the two rates have met. Everyone will tell you Palermo is safe and Constitución is not, and both are true.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a gay hotel in Buenos Aires?

One men-only guesthouse, Lugar Gay B&B on Defensa 1120 in San Telmo, and one gay-owned B&B, Le Petit Palais on Gorriti 3574. The Axel Hotel closed in 2013; its building is now the Viajero hostel. Everything else is mainstream and friendly, and Home Hotel in Palermo Hollywood is the one the gay guides recommend.

Where should I stay to walk to the gay bars?

Palermo Soho around Gurruchaga and Honduras for Peuteo, Maricafé and Sitges (Legado Mítico, Nuss, Mine, 1828 Smart); Recoleta between Laprida and Rodríguez Peña for Contramano, Zoom and Glam (Up Laprida, Mio, the Alvear); the Palermo–Almagro border for Amerika and the saunas (Le Petit Palais). The three poles are two to three kilometres apart and a five-dollar Uber from each other.

Do I pay the 21 per cent hotel tax?

Not if you are a foreign tourist paying with a foreign card and show your passport: accommodation is VAT-exempt for stays under ninety days and the hotel applies it at billing. Pay in cash pesos and you pay the tax.

Should I bring dollars in cash?

Only a little. The blue-dollar gap is about one per cent in October 2026, foreign cards settle at the official rate, and most places take cards. Carry some pesos for tips, SUBE, taxis and the saunas.

When is Buenos Aires Pride 2026 and 2027?

Saturday 7 November 2026, Plaza de Mayo to Congreso, after a Pride week from 31 October; the Pope arrives the next day and Ezeiza's runway is restricted until 11 November, so book flights and rooms early. The 2027 march is Saturday 6 November 2027.

Where do I get PEP?

Free within 72 hours at any public hospital emergency department; Hospital Fernández on Cerviño 3356 in Palermo is the one gay men use. Non-residents may be asked for insurance details for the drugs since August 2026.
