What reviewers say

Visitors frequently praise the friendly and helpful staff, clean and well-maintained facilities, and great atmosphere, with many recommending it as a top choice in Windhoek. However, some guests found certain rooms to be dark and noisy with less-than-clean shared bathrooms, and the breakfast quality was also a point of disappointment for some.

About this place Chameleon Backpackers & Guesthouse

Chameleon Backpackers is the most important LGBTQ+-welcoming accommodation in Namibia — not because it is exclusively gay (it is not) but because its reputation as an inclusive, judgement-free space has been established and maintained over many years of welcoming the full spectrum of travelers. Located in the leafy Klein Windhoek residential area, it offers dormitory and private room options, a swimming pool that functions as the social center, a bar with competitive prices, and a relaxed communal atmosphere that makes it easy to meet other travelers. LGBTQ+ visitors are explicitly welcomed and the guesthouse is well-connected to Namibia's small gay community through its years of operation. It is the natural base for budget and mid-range LGBTQ+ travelers in Windhoek and functions as an informal information hub for the local scene.

Great place for a night before leaving Namibia. Very friendly, the rooms were simple but clean and comfortable, the barbecue was delicious, and the evening entertainment in the form of a fun quiz was a great touch. Breakfast wasn't extensive, but perfectly acceptable for the price. We'd gladly return.

There are two Wi-Fi networks, and they are very stable. The hot water for the shower is only available from 6 to 8 pm. They didn't tell me this at check-in, so I was quite flustered when they told me midway through my stay. I wish they had told me at check-in. However, the water temperature was stable within the designated time. The security seems strong. There was an electrical grid on top of the thick walls. There are no security guards. You can also get pizza for dinner for an extra charge, which is convenient. The taste was good, not frozen or anything like that.

We stayed at this property twice, once upon our arrival and once upon our departure from Namibia. Both times, the staff were helpful, kind, and friendly. We had a private room with a bathroom, and both times the rooms were clean and well-maintained. The common area was lovely, offering food and drinks at virtually any time. A special thank you to the staff, who, upon learning of our honeymoon, tried to make everything even more special.

Chameleon Backpackers has been a great place to start our trip to Namibia. Clean and comfortable room with a lovely bar area. The highlight was the free walking tour we joined on our first morning. Leni and Amaarah took us around Windhoek and were incredibly knowledgeable about the area, bringing the city to life and kindly answered our endless questions! They were both wonderful tour guides and I can’t recommend doing it enough.

The most impressive thing for me was how clean and well-maintained the showers and toilets were. Even though they were shared facilities, they were so comfortable that I never felt uncomfortable using them. The shower pressure and water temperature were both perfect, and it was very convenient that towels were available free of charge. The complimentary breakfast was also a great help, and I really enjoyed the walking tour at 9:00 AM. The Wi-Fi connection was reliable as well. I also booked a tour with Chameleon Safaris, and they kindly provided free airport transfers, which was extremely helpful and made my arrival and departure much easier. Overall, I had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay. Thank you for providing such great facilities and hospitality! I would definitely like to stay here again if I come back to Namibia! The showers and toilets were kept incredibly clean, and even though they were shared, they were so comfortable that I didn't mind at all. The water temperature and pressure were perfect. The free towels were a great help. The Wi-Fi connection was also reliable. The walking tour starting at 9 AM was also enjoyable. The free breakfast every day was a great help. Since I booked the tour through Chameleon Safari, the free airport transfer was also very helpful. Thank you very much!

A really lovely place to literally and figuratively land in Namibia. We arrived stressed because my luggage had been lost by the airport in Amsterdam. The staff at Chameleon were incredibly helpful and patient in helping find a solution. That was invaluable!
