Durban Pride, the annual LGBTQ+ march, cuts through central Durban, KwaZulu-Natal's biggest city. It's been run by the Durban Lesbian and Gay Community and Health Centre for years. Nonhlanhla Mkhize took the helm as director of both the centre and Durban Pride in 2024, according to GroundUp.
The day plays out as a street march that ends in a park gathering. Lately, the route's gone from the CBD to Gugu Dlamini Park, named after the HIV activist. Earlier editions took a different path, marching along the beachfront instead.
The date changes each year. In 2019, the parade fell on June 29; in 2022, it was sometime in June. You'll need to keep an eye on local news and the centre's channels from May onward to catch the exact date.
Turnout's been all over the place. The ninth parade, in 2019, drew a crowd of between 5,000 and 8,000 people. After a two-year COVID hiatus, the 2022 march saw a mere 300 people. But by 2024, numbers were up, with GroundUp reporting over 1,000 attendees. In July 2026, the Rising Sun noted hundreds marching down Dr Pixley KaSeme Street to Gugu Dlamini Park, joined by government officials, civil-society groups, and businesses.
The 2027 dates hadn't been announced when we checked.
