Last verified: October 2026. Gay Phuket is one pedestrian lane. The Paradise Complex, the sois at the foot of the Royal Paradise Hotel off Rat-U-Thit 200 Pee Road in Patong, holds every gay bar on the island, the only gay sauna and the only men-only guesthouse, and it is smaller than it was ten years ago: Boat Bar, Kiss, G-Club and the Connection bar are gone, Zag and the Cruise Club carry the nights. Everything else about a gay week here is a matter of distance from that lane: zero minutes if you sleep at the Royal Paradise or the Aquarius, ten to the unofficial gay beach in front of La Flora, fifteen by taxi to the island's one clothing-optional pool villa in the Kathu hills, forty-five to the old town, an hour to the resort coves people fly here for. This guide gives those distances, what each place actually is, the Thai rules that matter in 2026 (visa-free cut to 30 days, afternoon alcohol ban gone, cannabis medical-only, vapes illegal, joiner fees), Pride and the festivals, how to get over Patong Hill, and where PEP is at three in the morning.

Where to sleep, in real minutes

Minutes are on foot from the mouth of the Paradise Complex on Rat-U-Thit 200 Pee Road, where Zag, the Cruise Club, (i) Bar, Hangout, OK Karaoke, My Way's cabaret and the Aquarius sauna share two short sois; the hotel cards on this site measure to the same cluster. Patong is flat, hot and badly lit off the main roads; after midnight a tuk-tuk is THB 200 for anything beyond ten minutes.

    • In the complex (Royal Paradise 0 min, Aquarius 1, Connect Guesthouse 1, Fong Kaew / Baan Nang Fa 2): bars open about 20:00, the street drag at Zag is around 23:30, the clubs run to 02:00–04:00, and the sound reaches every room facing the sois.
    • Rat-U-Thit and the Jungceylon blocks (Novotel Vintage Park 5 min, Millennium 6, Sleep With Me 8, Kee Resort 10): the main road behind the beach, with the mall, Bangla Road (the straight neon strip, five minutes away) and the men's massage shops.
    • The beach road (B-Lay Tong 8 min, Holiday Inn Express 8, La Flora 10–12): Thaweewong Road along the sand. The unofficial gay beach is the stretch in front of La Flora, marked by a rainbow flag and late-afternoon volleyball; there is no official gay beach on Phuket and loungers were banned on this stretch in 2026, so bring a towel.
    • South and north Patong (Amari 25 min, Impiana 30, Avista 35, Kalima 40): resorts on the headlands with their own coves; tuk-tuk territory at night.
    • Kathu (Phuket Gay Homestay): the inland district over Patong Hill, 15–20 minutes by taxi or Grab (THB 250–400), with nothing to walk to.
    • Old Phuket Town (Casa Blanca, Memory at On On, Sino House): 15 km and 30–45 minutes east by the one road over the hill; songthaews run by day (THB 30–50), Grab by night (THB 350–500).
    • Kata, Karon, Kamala, Surin, Rawai, Panwa: 25–60 minutes; the Smart Bus links the airport, Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata and Rawai for a flat THB 100.

    Who changed

    • Boat Bar, the complex's drag institution, is permanently closed; the Cruise Club (123/12, drag shows, 4.7 on Google in 2026) occupies, by local account, its former space. Kiss (2015), G-Club (December 2023), the Connection Bar, MO2 and TARA Sauna in the old town (October 2024) are gone. Tangmo is listed open by one 2026 guide and closed by another; My Way may have merged into Zag. Check the lane on your first night; it changes every season.
    • Club One Seven, the gay hotel and sauna on Prachanukhro Road, is closed; the Aquarius is the only sauna.
    • Phuket Pride moved from April to June in 2024 and is now run by the provincial office with the Andaman Power association; the Old Town got its own Phuket City Pride in late June. The InterPride World Conference, the global Pride organisers' congress, is in Patong on 28 October – 1 November 2026, its first time in Asia.
    • Thai law, 2025–26: marriage equality in force since 23 January 2025; the 14:00–17:00 alcohol sales ban abolished on 29 May 2026 (shops sell 11:00–24:00); cannabis back to prescription-only since 25 June 2025; visa-free stays cut from 60 to 30 days for most Western passports from 15 September 2026; the Digital Arrival Card compulsory since May 2025; the THB 300 tourist fee still not collected.
    • The Patong tunnel under the hill is still a plan; the earliest opening is 2031, so the one road over Patong Hill stays the only way in.

Rules, fees and bringing someone back

    • Joiners: Thai hotels register an overnight visitor against his Thai ID or passport, which reception holds until he leaves, and many charge a joiner fee of THB 500–1,000 per person; the small guesthouses in the complex are relaxed about it, the resorts less so. Ask at booking. Money boys work the go-go bars and Zag; a "bar fine" (THB 300–600) pays the venue for a staff member's early exit, and anything after that is private. Prostitution is illegal on paper and tolerated in practice; public sex is not tolerated, and 2026 cases ended in fines and deportation.
    • Age and ID: 20 to drink; the clubs rarely card foreigners, the sauna checks. Carry a photo of your passport.
    • Taxes and fees: hotel prices marked "++" add 10% service and 7% VAT, about 17.7%; the cheap guesthouses quote all-in. No resort fees. The THB 300 arrival fee has been approved for years and never started.
    • Nudity: legal nowhere public; the Gay Homestay pool and the sauna are the options. Smoking on Patong beach carries a fine of up to THB 100,000 on paper. Freedom Beach and Nai Harn are not gay beaches, whatever older pages say.
    • Drugs and vapes: cannabis needs a Thai medical prescription since June 2025 and public smoking is fined; e-cigarettes are illegal to possess, with on-the-spot fines of THB 20,000–30,000 reported for tourists and hundreds of arrests in 2025. Leave the vape at home.
    • Hours: Patong's entertainment zone was allowed to serve until 04:00 from December 2023; Zag lists 20:00–04:00, most bars close at 02:00–03:00; a 2025 plan to extend 04:00 nationwide was not confirmed as law by October 2026.
    • Road rules: renting a scooter needs a motorcycle licence plus an international permit with the motorcycle category; checkpoints at Patong Hill fine THB 500–2,000 for no helmet or no licence and booked 20,900 foreigners in 2025; Phuket counted 91 road deaths by October 2025, 84% on two wheels. Never leave your passport as a deposit.

    Three picks per budget

Getting in late and getting around

    • Airport: HKT is 35 km and 60–90 minutes from Patong. The Smart Bus (Terminal 3, third floor, exit 3) runs to Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata and Rawai for a flat THB 100, roughly 08:15–23:30. The official taxi counter charges THB 650–800 to Patong including the airport surcharge; Grab is the only app allowed inside the compound (about THB 850 and more at peak); Bolt is 20–30% cheaper but picks up 300 m outside the gates. Pre-booked transfers THB 500–800.
    • In Patong: tuk-tuks have no meters; THB 150–200 for a hop, THB 400–600 to Kata or Karon, double after midnight. Grab bikes exist. Songthaews to the old town (THB 30–50) run by day only from the beach road; after dark it is Grab at THB 350–500.
    • Buses and boats: the Smart Bus and the Phuket Town city bus (THB 50) are the only public transport; ferries to Phi Phi leave Rassada pier (THB 500–950, one to two hours); the Phang Nga Bay day trips add a THB 300 park fee.
    • Traffic: one road over Patong Hill, jammed from 16:00 to 19:00 and after rain. Allow an hour for anything that looks like 20 minutes on the map.

    Health

    • PEP within 72 hours: Bangkok Hospital Phuket (2/1 Hongyok Utis Road, Phuket Town, 24-hour emergency, private, English) is the reliable address, with a 28-day course priced in the THB 5,000–15,000 range at Thai private clinics; Patong Hospital (57 Sai Nam Yen Road) is the nearest public emergency room; Vachira Phuket is the public hospital in town with the HIV programme. By day, Pulse Clinic Patong (127/1 Rat-U-Thit 200 Pee Road, until 20:00, +66 95 261 5282) and Phuket Medical Clinic sell PEP and PrEP without fuss; Andaman Power, the local MSM association, offers free testing. PrEP runs about THB 1,000–2,000 a month at Thai clinics; bring your own for the first week.
    • Pharmacies: Boots and Watsons in Jungceylon close with the mall around 22:00; 7-Eleven is 24 hours for basics; Bangkok Hospital's pharmacy runs late. No 24-hour pharmacy in Patong.
    • Dengue, sea and sun: Phuket is among Thailand's highest-dengue provinces, worst in the rains; repellent at dusk and no aspirin for fever. The May–October swell drowns visitors at Patong and Karon every year; red flags mean it. The 2025 Patong stings were fire jellyfish, not box jellyfish, and there are no stinger nets. Reef-toxic sunscreens are banned in the marine parks. Mandatory tourist insurance is still only a proposal; buy your own.

Phuket in a paragraph

Thailand legalised same-sex marriage in January 2025, the country's kathoey have been visible for a century, and Patong has hosted a Pride since 1999; the Paradise Complex was for years the gayest hundred metres in Southeast Asia outside Bangkok, and what is left of it is still the friendliest. Do the things everyone does: the gay beach in front of La Flora at 16:00 for the volleyball, the Big Buddha and Promthep Cape at sunset, mee hokkien and moo hong in the old town, the Sunday walking street on Thalang Road, Simon Cabaret once, Bangla Road once and never again, Phi Phi by speedboat, the Vegetarian Festival's firecrackers if you are here in October, and the street drag outside Zag at half past eleven. Visitor numbers fell slightly in 2026 (Russia, China and India are the big markets) and prices with them; the island is cheaper than its reputation and hotter than you expect.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a gay hotel in Phuket?

Two men-only places: the Aquarius Gay Guesthouse & Sauna inside the Paradise Complex in Patong, and the Phuket Gay Homestay, a clothing-optional pool villa in Kathu. The Royal Paradise Hotel at the complex entrance is the mixed hotel most gay visitors choose. Club One Seven and the Connect bar have closed.

Where should I stay to walk to the gay bars?

At the Royal Paradise, the Aquarius or the guesthouses in the complex (zero to two minutes), or anywhere on Rat-U-Thit 200 Pee Road and the beach road between Jungceylon and Haad Patong Road (five to ten minutes). Everything outside Patong is a taxi.

Where is the gay beach?

Phuket has no official one. Gay men gather on Patong beach directly in front of La Flora Resort on the beach road, ten minutes' walk from the complex, flag and volleyball from mid-afternoon. Kata, Karon and Bang Tao are the quieter alternatives.

Can I bring someone back to my hotel?

Usually, with his ID held at reception and often a joiner fee of THB 500–1,000; ask at booking. The complex guesthouses are relaxed; the resorts are stricter.

When is Phuket Pride 2027?

Not announced; since 2024 it has been the first week of June in Patong, with the parade on the Sunday, and the Old Town Pride in late June. The Vegetarian Festival is 30 September to 8 October 2027.

What changed in Thai rules for 2026?

Visa-free stays are 30 days (not 60) since 15 September 2026; the Digital Arrival Card is compulsory; the afternoon alcohol ban is gone; cannabis is prescription-only; vapes are illegal to possess; the THB 300 tourist fee is still not charged.
