About this place Gimlet

Gimlet is a restaurant and bar at 33 Russell Street, at the Flinders Street end of the CBD. It is a mainstream restaurant with no particular LGBTQ+ angle. We list it because it is well reviewed and central, and Melbourne is an easy city for same-sex couples to eat out in. Google rates it 4.6 from about 2,250 reviews. For a meal with a queer crowd, Mollie's Bar & Diner and Evie's Disco Diner in Fitzroy both serve food and are a short ride up Smith Street on the 86 tram.

What a wonderful way to finish my birthday celebration! We came to this restaurant straight after another restaurant where we had a very disappointing experience. From the very first moment we walked in, we felt genuinely welcomed. The staff were extremely friendly, warm and attentive - truly going above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and looked after. They made my birthday feel special, and I really appreciated the care and thought they put into the evening. To top it all off, they surprised me with a special dessert and a candle, wishing me a Happy Birthday. It was such a lovely and thoughtful gesture and exactly the kind of personal touch that makes a celebration memorable. The restaurant itself has a very pleasant and elegant atmosphere, which made the experience even more enjoyable. After the disappointing start to my birthday evening, this was the perfect way to turn it around. A truly lovely experience and a wonderful finish to my birthday celebration. Thank you to the whole team for making my night so special!

This as my first ever time at Gimlet, I had originally been recommended here because a friend had suggested it was the best Melbourne food restaurant. I took my long time Canadian friend here and they were equally blown away. Because I went with 3 other people I got an opportunity to try almost all the mains and entrees. First off the duck and prawn pasta entree was insanely good, the chefs really nailed the line between too salty and too savoury, both dishes were perfectly seasoned, if I could I would want to try that duck entree all over again. For mains I got to try the steak, dory and chicken, my favourite out of the three was the chicken. Originally I had thought it would be similar to charcoal chicken as it said it was smoked in coals, but this chicken was the best tasting chicken I’ve had in my life, the flavour, depth and umami was sensational. The steak and dory were cooked as expected but I seriously loved the chicken. Now for drinks I ordered the Don Julio margarita and that was really good (as expected from Don), and for my second drink I got an old fashioned, no complaints with the old fashioned as it was equally delicious (not as good as that chicken though!). I finished off my meal with dark chocolate fraiche and a “Caramelised brioche, almond milk and Meyer lemon”, I highly recommend the Meyer lemon, that tasted much better than the chocolate fraiche, for better context the lemon is ice cream or gelato scooped into a lemon peel. I will 100% be coming back to this establishment, the food, atmosphere, service was all 10/10, I loved it.

Service- excellent, didn't recall the name of our waiter but he was very nice and pleasant. Drink menu- lots of variety , shame my tolerance to alc isn't much. But the non alcoholic drinks were nice. A la carte- season menu. Had a variety of items to try. Stand out were the pasta, t bone and the cabbage. The John dory was a bit plain and the scallops a bit under whelming. Need to book unless you go at a random time. Good atmosphere not too loud or echoy .
