Hares & Hyenas

My friend and I had a wonderful time shopping here, the gentleman behind the counter was delightful to chat to. We both came away feeling really awesome. The non-fiction section was refreshingly diverse, I probably could’ve spent hours and a couple hundred dollars if time allowed.

Patrons need to know that Hares Hyenas misplaced a consignment of my novel "A Butterfly", which they signed and accepted on 21.06.25 at the Q-Lit Festival. It was only when I followed up three months later/Sept 2025, that I was unapologetically informed and refused compensation by Rowland Thomson, who (ironically) blamed me for Hares Hyenas mistake. A Butterfly is a queer YA coming of age story set in Australia and Sri Lanka, where the novel is published. I self-funded postage/DHL of copies and my transport to Melbourne from Canberra on 21.06.25. Hares Hyenas misplacing copies of my novel has left me out-of-pocket significantly. Moreover, as a first-time author, contributing actively to equality discourse in the cross-cultural/S.Asian queer space, I feel discriminated by Hares Hyenas' dismissal of my concerns. To date, I am yet to receive an apology from Rowland Thomson, who when I called (03.09.25) abruptly cut me off by saying "Speak only if you have something constructive to say!"

Every LGBTQ+ book I’ve ever wanted to buy, I’ve been able to find at this store. The owner is lovely. I would recommend this store 100%

If you can not find a book you want, you can ask them to order it in for you, and they will not ask any questions outside of what book you want or jugde you off of its contents.

Every manner and genre of books. An exceptional community resource and fun puruse.

Hares & Hyenas is somewhere I HAVE to see whenever I'm in Melbourne. Although I miss its old location, it's nice to drop in on someone who's dedicated so much of their life to making queer media more accessible.
