There are places where you go for food… and then there are places where you go for an experience wrapped in history.
Yesterday evening, we chose the legendary The Elgin Fairlawn — one of Kolkata’s most iconic heritage properties, carrying stories and old-world charm for generations.
The moment you enter, you can actually feel the weight of history in the air. The vintage décor, antique wooden furniture, softly glowing chandeliers, heavily cushioned chairs, elegant bone china cutlery, and the timeless colonial ambience instantly transport you to another era. The property beautifully balances nostalgia with comfort, with both indoor dining and a serene garden seating area for those who enjoy a quieter evening under the open sky.
Since ours was a true multi-generational dinner outing, the orders reflected everyone’s mood and preference — and surprisingly, every cuisine stood out equally well. My daughter went for Continental, I explored the Chinese section, while my wife and father-in-law chose Indian classics. That consistency across cuisines is perhaps the reason why this historic establishment still continues to remain relevant and loved.
We started the evening with refreshing glasses of Aam Panna — absolutely perfect to set the tone for a relaxed dinner.
For starters, we ordered the classic Bruschetta — crisp, fresh, flavourful, and beautifully plated. What really impressed me was the dining pace. The staff never rushed the experience. They allowed us to finish the starters comfortably before serving the mains, something rarely seen these days.
And then came the feast.
The Chicken Lasagna was rich, cheesy, creamy, and deeply comforting with beautifully layered pasta and chicken filling.
The Mixed Fried Rice was loaded generously with egg, chicken, lamb, and prawns — every spoonful felt indulgent.
The Fish in Butter Garlic Sauce was delicate yet flavour-packed, with the sauce perfectly balanced.
Alongside that, the Chicken Bharta and freshly made rotis added the familiar Indian warmth to the table.
What stood out most was not just the taste or the portion size — both were excellent — but the overall experience. The dinner felt unhurried, elegant, and relaxed… the kind of meal where conversations flow naturally between courses.
After a short pause, we ended the evening on a high note with a sizzling Chocolate Walnut Brownie topped with ice cream — warm, decadent, and the perfect finale to a heritage dining experience.
Some places survive because of nostalgia.
But places like The Elgin Fairlawn continue to thrive because they still understand the art of hospitality.
