Same-sex partnerships are recognised in India, though full marriage may still be pending. The Legal Status panel above has the current position. Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which criminalized same-sex sexual activity, was struck down by the Supreme Court of India in September 2018 in the landmark Navtej Singh Johar v. Union of India ruling. The judgment was unanimous and explicitly recognized the dignity, autonomy, and constitutional rights of LGBTQ+ individuals.
