Rainbow Reel Tokyo
About This Event
Rainbow Reel Tokyo, the city's LGBTQ+ film festival, has been running since 1992. It was initially called the Tokyo International Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, and it's still organized by a nonprofit with the same name. The festival is small, with only a handful of features - most of which are shown in Japan for the first time.
The 33rd edition, in 2026, took place over two weekends in Shibuya. EuroLive hosted the first two days, June 20 and 21, and the Tokyo Women's Plaza Hall took over on July 11 and 12. Eight features screened over those four days, with seven of them making their Japan debut. The previous year's edition also jumped between two venues.
You can catch Rainbow Reel Tokyo right next to Tokyo Pride in June, making it easy to plan a trip around both events. The 2027 dates hadn't been announced when we checked, but June and July have been the norm for recent editions.
