I have tea or a meal at the Hotel New Grand Main Building (completed in 1927 / designed by Jin Watanabe / Yokohama City designated historical building) a few times a year 🍽 The New Grand Main Building was completed in 1927 (Showa 2) and designed by Jin Watanabe, who also designed the Hattori Clock Shop (Wako Building) in Ginza ✏️ It is one of Yokohama's famous architectural works❣️ The neon lights on the roof, which are a symbol of the New Grand, were not there from the time of completion, but were added in 1933 (Showa 8). The designer of this rooftop extension was J.H. Morgan, also known for designing the "First Class Grandstand at the Former Negishi Racecourse" ✏️. In January 2026, I went to the Strawberry Fair at Hotel New Grand 🍓 My goal was the strawberry parfait offered during the fair 🍓 When the strawberry parfait arrived at my table, it was beautiful and elegant from the first glance ❣️ The bright red of the strawberries was accented by the white coconut meringue, making it very stylish ❣️ Now, as for the taste, the strawberry sherbet on top had just the right amount of strawberry tartness, which complemented the sweetness of the strawberries perfectly 🍓 Furthermore, the black tea ice cream beneath the strawberry sherbet had an elegant flavor ☕️ Overall, the balance of sweetness and tartness was just right, enhancing the taste of the strawberries 🍓 Spending time in this magnificent Showa-era building was truly a luxurious experience ✨ Every detail, from the decorations to the lighting, was refined, and I'm always overwhelmed by the atmosphere the moment I enter the main building. I was able to enjoy the elegant taste of the season in this magnificent Showa-era building 🍽 I was very satisfied ❣️

August 2026 I made a reservation for the limited-time summer lunch buffet and visited the hotel. This lunch buffet is held irregularly in the Phoenix Room, which is usually used for weddings and corporate banquets. The fact that the Phoenix Room is usually closed to the public for a lunch buffet was exciting. The menu that day included cut steak, roast beef, New Grand's traditional Neapolitan pasta, and seafood gratin. As expected from a hotel kitchen, every dish was consistently delicious. Although the lunch buffet is only held for a limited number of days, it is held in two sessions per day (morning/afternoon) with about 20 tables, so there are only about 50 participants. The buffet counter is divided into sections for appetizers, main courses, side dishes, and desserts, so there wasn't much of a wait. This might be the most comfortable buffet I've ever experienced. The clientele... there were a few of the typical "greedy older men" you might find at a buffet, but it was much quieter and more relaxed than buffets I've experienced at other hotels, allowing me to enjoy my meal in peace. And what deserves special mention is the excellent service from the hotel staff. There were some rookies who still seemed a little inexperienced, but I was very impressed by their diligent and meticulous work. There was none of the condescending politeness often found in veteran hotel staff; the service was very pleasant. This is just speculation, but I think they probably don't hire part-timers just for the buffet; they're 100% full-time employees. It was a wonderful lunch that became a great summer vacation memory. Thank you for the delicious meal today.
