The honest summary: Seoul has two gay nightlife districts that barely overlap. Itaewon is where the clubs, the drag and the foreign crowd are, and it only really works on Friday and Saturday after midnight. Jongno 3-ga is the Korean side: dozens of tiny upstairs bars with a host at the counter, an older local crowd and karaoke. Most visitors only see Itaewon. Spend at least one evening in Jongno and you will see a different city.
Legal in one line: same-sex relations are legal for civilians in South Korea, but there is no partnership recognition or anti-discrimination law, and most gay Koreans are not out. Don't photograph people in bars, and don't tag anyone online.
Itaewon: Homo Hill
Homo Hill is the steep lane of Usadan-ro 12-gil behind the Hamilton Hotel, a few minutes from Itaewon station (Line 6). It is short, perhaps 110 metres, and most people walk up and down it several times a night.
- Why Not (10 Usadan-ro 12-gil) – the long-running K-pop bar with music videos on the screens and a crowd that sings along. VAYL lists it 20:00–02:00 Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday, until 05:00 Friday and Saturday, closed Monday.
- Eat Me (8 Usadan-ro 12-gil) – a small cocktail bar that Travel Gay calls one of the oldest on the hill; a conversation stop between clubs.
- MICHIN (7 Usadan-ro 12-gil) – a bear bar in the room that Queen used for decades. Thursday to Sunday from 22:00.
- Eagle Seoul (B1, 13 Usadan-ro 12-gil) – the leather and cruising club, with backrooms and theme nights; Friday from 23:00 until 06:00, Saturday until 08:00.
- Miracle (18 Usadan-ro 12-gil) – the hill's lesbian bar, opposite Eagle; everyone is welcome.
- Notea and Dirty Heaven – one lane over and at the top of the hill respectively; Notea plays disco and house, Dirty Heaven is a bear-and-muscle bar with a rooftop.
- Trance (B1, 7 Usadan-ro 12-gil) – the old drag and show bar. It still advertises nights on Instagram, but it has dropped out of the Korean listings, so check before you go.
- PUBLIC (B1, 192 Itaewon-ro) – the big performance club, with drag and showgirl shows; Friday to Sunday from 23:00. Expect a cover charge and a queue.
- PING (195 Itaewon-ro) – the K-pop after-club, from midnight until about 09:00 on Friday and Saturday. Ground is upstairs in the same building, K-pop and EDM with no cover.
- dopamin (B1, 189 Itaewon-ro), KOOKIE (B1, 46 Usadan-ro) and the men-only The Red (3F, 43 Usadan-ro) – newer clubs, mostly Friday and Saturday from 23:00 or midnight.
- GYM (B1, 36 Usadan-ro) – rave and EDM rather than K-pop, with Bear Ball parties; Friday and Saturday 22:00–06:00.
- Queen (B1, 124 Bogwang-ro) – Seoul's oldest gay club, which left Homo Hill in 2025 and reopened here, with karaoke and theme nights, Friday to Sunday from 23:00. Bear Cave is next door at 128 Bogwang-ro, a late bear club from midnight.
- RUSH (3F, 10 Bogwang-ro 59-gil) – a lounge club with no cover, open since 2024. One floor below, 2F has drag shows at 23:00 and 01:00 on Friday and Saturday (about ₩15,000).
- Quieter options: SHIBA (2F, 37 Usadan-ro), a cocktail bar open every night from 19:00, and TAPE on the sixth floor of 47 Usadan-ro.
- Friends (7 Supyo-ro 28-gil) – open since 2004, behind Nakwon Arcade, used to visitors; daily from 21:00.
- Shortbus – English-speaking staff, a good first stop.
- The Samchang Building at 26 Donhwamun-ro 11-gil – SHUTTER (2F), GLOVE (3F), Mbar (5F) and DZBZ (6F, with a rooftop) in one stairwell.
- Red Face (3F, 123-6 Supyo-ro) – karaoke bar with a drag show every Saturday.
- Y Seoul (behind 59 Donhwamun-ro) – a small K-pop club with no cover and a drag show on Saturdays around 01:30.
- VIVA (B1, 117-1 Jong-ro), HYDE (2F, 109-2 Supyo-ro), Bar MoU, A/V Take C, STUD and Gnome – small local bars worth trying as you walk.
- On the Ikseon-dong side: Bar Jungle for cocktails, MYHUNK for bears and K-pop girl groups, and the queer-friendly cocktail bar Ounce.
- Use Naver Map or KakaoMap, not Google, and save exact addresses; most bars have no street sign.
- Bring cash. Some clubs add a cover on party nights; several Itaewon clubs (Ground, RUSH, Y Seoul in Jongno) have none.
- The subway stops around midnight. After that, night buses or a Kakao T taxi.
- Halloween weekends in Itaewon come with police crowd control since the 2022 crush that killed 159 people; expect closed lanes.
- Korean drug law is harsh and applies to foreigners.
Itaewon: the new club blocks
Since 2024 the weekend has moved downhill, to the main road around the Itaewon fire station and the side streets off Bogwang-ro. Local listings call it a club boom, and it is where the young crowd goes now.
Up the hill in Haebangchon, Rabbithole Arcade Pub mixes arcade games and weekend drag, and Uplift Seoul is a small bar with a drag stage. Both draw a mixed Korean and expat crowd.
Jongno 3-ga: the Korean bars
Take Lines 1, 3 or 5 to Jongno 3-ga. Korean gay bars have been in these alleys since the late 1970s, and sources count about 75 of them around Nakwon Arcade. Most are upstairs rooms with a host behind the counter, and many expect you to order a bottle with a plate of snacks (anju) rather than single drinks. Staff may ask whether you know what kind of bar this is; say yes, smile, and you are usually in.
Hongdae, Gangnam and Sillim
Bars for queer women are mostly in Hongdae and the Mapo district. Travel Gay's 2026 list names The Concept, a lesbian pub at 31-10 Wausan-ro 21-gil; several women-only clubs there share their address only by direct message on Instagram. In Gangnam, Loba is a gay-owned whisky and wine bar at 522 Gangnam-daero (formerly JR Bar). Sillim, in the southwest on Line 2, has a small younger local cluster, including the bear bar KAMUI.
Closed or changed
Queen moved rather than closed (see above). Tool in Jongno (the former HERO Bar) shows as permanently closed on Google. Always Homme, Soho, Barcode, Club Qubic and Pink Hole are closed. Kockiri, the queer electronic bar on Usadan-ro, closed at the end of 2024, reopened for a while and announced in September 2026 that it was ending its current way of operating. FEVER in Itaewon has been on hiatus since 28 September 2026.
