What reviewers say

Visitors frequently praise the delicious and filling food, with the French toast and large platters being highlights. The friendly staff and well-behaved shop dogs, particularly the Bernese Mountain Dogs, are also commonly mentioned positives. However, some visitors experienced long wait times for food, especially on weekends, even with reservations.

About this place Bear Bar

Bear Bar is exactly what the name promises and makes no apologies for it: a dedicated gathering space for the bear community and their admirers, one of the most popular venues of its type in Taipei and a well-established fixture of the Ximending social calendar. The crowd reflects the venue's identity clearly — stocky, hairy, masculine-presenting men and their fans fill the bar on busy nights, and the atmosphere is specifically and comfortably coded for those who recognize the culture. This is not an aggressively exclusive environment, however; curious visitors and those outside the immediate bear demographic are welcomed without hostility as long as they approach the space with appropriate respect. The bar setup is straightforward and unpretentious: drinks are good and reasonably priced, the music is pitched at conversation volume rather than dance-floor level, and the lighting is dim enough to create a comfortable social atmosphere. Bear Bar hosts themed events tied to the broader bear calendar — specifically around Taipei Pride week — that draw visitors from across Asia and beyond, and these events give the venue a particularly charged energy. For gay male travelers with any connection to bear culture, this is a must-visit; for others, it is an interesting and authentic window into a distinct and well-developed corner of Taipei's gay social world.

The shop is on the second floor, a little out of the bustling Ximending area, but still within walking distance. The shop dog is very well-behaved, and the staff is friendly. The food was surprisingly delicious, everything was great. The French toast, in particular, was incredibly soft and tender – a must-order! The large platters are great; the 8-inch platter is sufficient for women, around NT$230, with an additional NT$85 to upgrade to French toast. The 12-inch platter for men is served on a porcelain plate – very generous portions! The Thai-style spicy and tomato red sauce is unique and pairs wonderfully with the salted pork and pan-fried chicken leg. Drinks are available with varying sweetness and ice; the huge cups are perfect for takeout if you can't finish them. The salad bar is generous, and the fried king oyster mushrooms are delicious. Customization is available; you can tell the staff in advance what you don't want to order, which is very considerate and high-quality – highly recommended! Takeout drinks are smaller, but dine-in is fantastic – you'll definitely feel full before leaving.

This is a super delicious restaurant with very generous portions. Girls with small appetites might consider ordering one dish. I accidentally ordered the wrong thing – I'm afraid to eat spicy food and ordered Thai tom yum instead – but the staff at the counter were very kind and gave me an extra small plate of curry sauce. The service was excellent! I'll definitely come back again! Also, the dog at the shop is super cute; customers can pet it. It's a very gentle big dog.

A weekday morning visit was very pleasant. The owner, knowing we came specifically for the Bernese Mountain Dogs, even gave us dog treats so I could interact with the assistant manager, Dongmei. The food is mostly whole-food items, a rare find when dining out.
