About This Event
Chiang Mai Pride has a complicated history. It started on 21 February 2009, when a few hundred activists tried to march from the Chiang Mai Religion Practice Centre on Tha Pae Road. But Red Shirt supporters blocked the exits with trucks and loudspeakers, and the parade never happened. People were trapped inside until late at night. This led to the formation of the Sao Saw Et group.
It took ten years for Pride to return, on 21 February 2019. This time, over 1,000 people walked the same route, with police leading the march.
By 2026, Chiang Mai Pride had moved to May and was kicking off Thailand's pride season under the 'Inclusive City Chiang Mai' banner. On 17 May, there was a GEN ACT run around the moat. Human-rights workshops followed on 22 May. On Sunday, 24 May, provincial officials, businesses, and civil society signed a memorandum of understanding at Tha Pae Gate. The parade, made up of 37 groups, left the Buddhist centre around 17:30 and made its way through the Night Bazaar and along Loi Kroh Road to Tha Pae Gate. The evening ended with performances, a costume contest, and a blessing for same-sex couples.
Organisers see this as part of Thailand's push for WorldPride 2030. Everything's free, and it all takes place within walking distance, just east of the old-city moat. As of our last check, the 2027 dates hadn't been announced.
