Split Pride
About This Event
Split Pride is the Dalmatian coast's Pride march, and its first year shapes how locals still talk about it. On 11 June 2011 a few hundred marchers were met by thousands of counter-protesters. Police counted more than 3,500 and organisers about 10,000. Stones, bottles and tear gas were thrown, and Amnesty International criticised the police for failing to protect the march. Later marches have gone ahead under police protection, and recent ones have passed off peacefully.
It's a small, activist-run event. The 2026 programme ran from 5 to 27 June with 18 events: drag nights, a PrEP and PEP talk, exhibitions and youth-led workshops. They were held at Klub Kocka, the Youth Centre (Dom mladih), the LGBT Centre Split and Ghetto Club.
The march set off at 7pm on 27 June, 15 years after the first one, under the slogan "Nije me mater rodila da mučin" (roughly, "My mother didn't raise me to suffer in silence"). Its focus was LGBTIQ+ kids in schools. Somewhere between 300 and 400 people took part, according to a University of Warsaw researcher who marched. Police counted about 300 in 2024.
The 2027 dates hadn't been announced when we checked. Recent marches have been in late June or early July.
