Best Cruising Areas in Copenhagen

Copenhagen does its nightlife on a bicycle. Late on a Friday the cycle lanes on Vesterbrogade still hum, the hot-dog wagons near the Town Hall steam in the cold, and the narrow lanes of the old Latin Quarter fill with students heading from one cellar bar to the next. Tucked into those same lanes, a few minutes' walk from Rådhuspladsen, is almost all of the city's gay cruising: a members' leather club, a dark men's bar, a three-floor sauna and, just over in Vesterbro, a basement cruise club. The scene is small, compact and grown-up, with strict dress codes at one end and a free internet café at the other. Here's what was running in 2026.

Legal in one line: sex between men has been legal in Denmark since 1933, the country introduced the world's first registered partnerships for same-sex couples in 1989, and same-sex marriage has been legal since 2012. Cruise clubs and saunas are legal private venues for adults; sex in public is not (see the box on the law below).

How cruising works in Copenhagen

Most of the action sits in a tight triangle just north and west of Rådhuspladsen (Town Hall Square): SLM on Lavendelstræde, Amigo Sauna on Studiestræde and Men's Bar on Teglgårdstræde are all within a ten-minute walk of each other. Body Bio is in Vesterbro, about ten minutes on foot from Copenhagen Central Station. The sauna opens in the afternoon and runs into the early morning at weekends; SLM is a weekend-night club; Men's Bar is open every evening. Grindr fills the gaps, as it does everywhere in Scandinavia.

Cruise clubs and bars

SLM Copenhagen (Scandinavian Leather Men) · Lavendelstræde 17

SLM is a volunteer-run fetish and SM club for men, just off Rådhuspladsen. misterb&b says it has operated since 1974; Travel Gay describes two bars, a large play area, a wet room and a darkroom over two floors. It's open on Friday and Saturday nights, and sometimes on Thursdays and Sundays, according to Travel Gay's listing (updated January 2025). Entry requires a membership, and each night has its own dress code: leather, rubber, uniform, army, sportswear, denim or construction gear, with rules on footwear too. Check the calendar on slm-cph.dk before you dress, or phone +45 33 32 06 01. It's the Copenhagen sister of the SLM clubs in Stockholm and Malmö, which run on the same members-and-dress-code model.

Men's Bar · Teglgårdstræde 3

Men's Bar is a small bar in the Latin Quarter that Visit Copenhagen describes as "simple and black", with an atmosphere that is "friendly but raw". The crowd is mostly men in jeans and leather, but anyone is let in whatever they're wearing. Nighttours, which files it under cruise clubs, describes red lights, leather details, music low enough to talk over and a downstairs area "where things can get more intimate"; it doesn't promise a darkroom, so treat it as a cruisy bar first. Nighttours lists Monday to Wednesday and Sunday 18:00–02:00 and Thursday to Saturday 15:00–02:00; Visit Copenhagen lists a daily happy hour from 15:00 to 21:00 and a free brunch on the first Sunday of the month. Body Bio · Kingosgade 7 (basement), Vesterbro

Body Bio is what Travel Gay calls a "small, dark basement cruise club": cabins, a maze, a darkroom, a play area and a free internet café. It welcomes all genders but mostly draws gay and bisexual men. Travel Gay (updated July 2026) lists it as open daily from 12:00, until midnight from Sunday to Thursday and until 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. GayTravelr gives entry at 80 kroner, with 20 kroner extra for the sauna, and 20 kroner if you arrive in the last 40 minutes before closing, plus a weekly naked night on Wednesdays from 20:00. Prices change, so treat those as a guide.

The sauna

Amigo Sauna · Studiestræde 31A

Amigo is Copenhagen's gay sauna, in the Latin Quarter a couple of minutes from Rådhuspladsen. misterb&b describes about 750 m² over three floors, with a dry sauna, a steam room, private cabins, darkrooms, a maze, video areas and two St Andrew's crosses on the top floor; The Gay Passport adds a leather bar, free relaxing cabins, lockers and Wi-Fi. Travel Gay (updated March 2025) and The Gay Passport (July 2025) list the same hours: closed Monday, Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday 14:00–04:00, Friday and Saturday 14:00–07:00. misterb&b says it's busiest on Thursday to Saturday evenings and on Sunday afternoons. Uncertain: Bearserk, the bear cruising bar that Xtra described at Studiestræde 41 in 2015, appears in older guides, but we found no 2025–2026 source showing it's still trading. Ignore any old guide that calls Body Bio a "former" sauna: it was listed with current hours in 2026.

Outdoors: the law and your safety

Copenhagen's parks are busy, well-used public spaces, and some old websites still name a few of them as cruising spots. We don't give directions. The indoor venues above are legal, a short walk apart and open most days of the week.

Danish law and practical safety:

• The law: under § 232 of the Danish Criminal Code (straffeloven), anyone who "by indecent behaviour offends modesty or causes public offence" (blufærdighedskrænkelse) can be punished with a fine or up to four years in prison. Sex in a park, a public toilet or anywhere else others can see you falls under it.
• Robbery: quiet, dark places are where thieves look for men who won't go to the police. Carry only your phone, one card and your ID.
• App dates: meet first in a bar or café, tell a friend where you're going and share your location.
• Emergency: call 112 for police, fire or an ambulance.

A Copenhagen night, the local way

Start with smørrebrød, the open rye sandwiches piled with herring, egg or roast beef, and a cold øl (beer); locals raise a glass with skål and look you in the eye while they do it. Later, the city's classic late-night snack is a hot dog from a pølsevogn, the sausage wagons on the squares, with remoulade, crispy onions and pickles. If you've got a free evening before the clubs open, do as the Danes do and make it hyggeligt: candles, a corner table and nowhere to be.

Practical tips

• Membership and doors: SLM needs a membership and the right gear for the night; the sauna and Body Bio charge at the door. Bring photo ID.
• Paying: Denmark uses the krone (DKK), not the euro, and cards are accepted almost everywhere; locals pay each other with MobilePay.
• Lockers and phones: use the locker, leave your passport at the hotel, and take no photos inside cruising areas.
• Consent: nej tak (no, thanks) is always enough, in any room.
• PrEP: in Denmark, PrEP is prescribed by infectious-disease specialists, usually at hospital outpatient clinics, and doctors can refer you there, according to a 2024 review in the Danish medical journal Ugeskrift for Læger. Bring your own supply if you're visiting.
• PEP: if a condom breaks, PEP works best when started within hours and must be started within 72 hours. In the Capital Region, call the medical helpline 1813 before going to an emergency department; in a life-threatening emergency call 112.
• Getting home: the city centre is walkable, the Metro runs through the night, and taxis are easy to find around Rådhuspladsen and the Central Station.
• Chems: if GHB/GBL is around, never mix it with alcohol and never dose for someone else. Call 112 if someone won't wake up.

Malmö across the bridge

Öresund trains link Copenhagen Central and Malmö C in about 35–40 minutes, via the airport. Malmö has a small, friendly scene of its own, with the queer bar Atemlos and its own SLM club: see our Malmö bars guide. Carry your passport or national ID card: Sweden has repeatedly extended its internal border checks, and travellers report document checks on trains at Hyllie, the first stop in Sweden. Pride

Copenhagen Pride Week 2026 ran from 10 to 16 August, with about 100 events across the city, according to Altinget's calendar. The parade set off at 13:00 on Saturday 15 August from Frederiksberg City Hall and followed Frederiksberg Allé and Vesterbrogade for about four kilometres to Rådhuspladsen, renamed Pride Square for the day, as Metroselskabet described it.
