Gay Pride & CSD Berlin
About This Event
Berlin's Christopher Street Day is the city's main Pride and one of the largest in Europe. It has run since 1979, it is organised by the volunteer association Berliner CSD e.V., and it is still a registered political demonstration rather than a parade with a permit to party. Every year has a motto. In 2026 it was "Haltung ist hot", roughly "having a backbone is hot", aimed at the Berlin state election on 20 September.
The 2026 edition was the first to run over two days. On Friday 24 July a rally took over the space in front of the Brandenburg Gate. On Saturday 25 July the march left Leipziger Straße near Spittelmarkt, passed Potsdamer Platz, swung through Nollendorfplatz in Schöneberg, the old gay quarter, and came back to Straße des 17. Juni for the closing rally at the Brandenburg Gate. Hundreds of thousands took part, with more than 80 floats and 55 walking groups. Neither the organisers nor the police published a single verified headcount that we could find.
That night the event was attacked. At around 10pm a man drove a rented minibus into people in the Großer Tiergarten, about 400 metres from the main event site, then went after passers-by with a machete. A 65-year-old woman from Warsaw was killed and 31 people were injured, three of them critically; two days later all of the injured were out of danger. Organisers stopped the event at 10:15pm and cancelled the next morning's CSD breakfast. The suspect, a 21-year-old Berliner the police already listed as an Islamist threat, was shot dead by a police unit in Spandau the following evening after advancing on officers with a knife. The federal interior minister called it an Islamist terror attack. About 5,000 people came to a memorial at Pariser Platz the next day.
Practical: the march is free and needs no registration to watch. Leipziger Straße and the Tiergarten end get the densest crowds, and Nollendorfplatz is where the neighbourhood bars spill onto the street. The weekend is also the busiest of the year for Berlin's queer clubs, so book rooms early.
The 2027 dates hadn't been announced when we checked. CSD Berlin usually falls on a Saturday in the second half of July.
