Axel Hotel Berlin is the flagship gay-specific hotel in Germany and one of the most significant in Europe — part of the Spanish-founded Axel Hotels chain that also operates in Barcelona, Madrid, Buenos Aires and Tel Aviv. The Berlin property occupies a 210-room building in Schöneberg, 200 metres from the Kurfürstendamm and walking distance from the Nollendorfplatz gay district. The signature feature is the rooftop SkyBar with its retractable roof and heated outdoor pool — arguably the best rooftop experience in Berlin, operating as a social hub for hotel guests and non-guests throughout the summer. The WhyNot Bar on the ground floor is a bear-friendly lounge bar that operates as a neighbourhood social venue as well as a hotel bar. Rooms are design-oriented: the chain's aesthetic is sleek without being cold, explicitly gay-branded without being campy. The location is ideal for gay travellers: walking distance from Schöneberg's bars, central enough for the entire city, near the U-Bahn to Kreuzberg, Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg. During CSD week in July, the hotel is a hub of activity — book 6+ months in advance for Pride. The hotel is genuinely gay-owned in its chain structure: guests can be entirely open in a way that requires no management of other guests' reactions.
