Intoxication is Political?! Double Book Premiere with Georg Schomerus and Robert Feustel
About the event
It is paradoxical: on the one hand, we experience intoxication and ecstasy to overcome real reality. They are part of festivals and rituals and can create communities. On the other hand, we know little about when (with) what was celebrated, which substance was glorified or became a problem, and why. And where the "artificial paradise" of intoxication ends and where it begins to become pathological. To close these knowledge gaps, PD Dr. Robert Feustel suggests understanding the term drug politically. The sociologist and political scientist (University of Leipzig) published his dissertation on the cultural history of intoxication in 2013. With his new book "Der verbotene Rausch. Wie Drogen zum Problem wurden" (Kohlhammer Verlag), he traces the interactions of drugs in medicine, politics, and pop culture over time.
Following the "Politics of Ecstasy," Prof. Dr. med. Georg Schomerus, Director of the Clinic and Polyclinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at Leipzig University Hospital and Professor of Psychiatry at Leipzig University, presents his years of research on the stigmatization of people with mental illnesses. In his new book "Katerland" (Beltz Verlag), he describes in an accessible way the tension field in which we want to understand alcohol consumption between supposed "responsibility and art of living, irresponsibility and immorality."
