Neighborhood Tour: Nazi Forced Labor in Schönefeld

During World War II, people from all over Europe were exploited as forced laborers in the Leipzig district of Schönefeld. The neighborhood tour provides a brief introduction to the topic of Nazi forced labor and presents selected sites where foreign laborers had to work and live under inhumane conditions. The postal sorting office on Rohrteichstraße (today Adenauerallee) and the parcel distribution center shaped the district. Forced laborers were also employed "at the post office" and housed in Schönefeld. Other forced laborers lived here for only a short time but were clearly present in everyday life.

Their living and working conditions will be discussed during the neighborhood tour, and the difficulties of fragmented archival findings will be discussed.

Finally, the history of a shopping arcade will be examined. Where a supermarket is located today, at least 400 forced laborers worked in a metalworking factory producing products for the arms industry between 1943 and 1945. Their camp on Kohlweg was within walking distance and forms the final point of the tour.
