Opening "Held. Deported from Germany 1938–1945"

Between 1938 and 1945, more than 200,000 people were deported from the German Reich. Most of them were murdered in the extermination camps, only a few survived. Numerous of these deportations are photographically documented. Images of deportations have survived from almost seventy German cities – many more recordings may still be undiscovered.
The research project #LastSeen has been securing, collecting, researching, and publishing these photos in a digital atlas since 2021 and making them available for research, education, and memorial work. The project has already received numerous awards for this. The project's image atlas can be accessed at atlas.lastseen.org.

"Held" shows selected photographs of the deportations of Jews, Sinti and Roma, as well as victims of Nazi "euthanasia". It also shows the perpetrators and onlookers who were present at the deportations. Because deportations were visible. They took place in broad daylight. Many people chose to watch and often participate in the deportation of their neighbors.
