Workshop: Personification of Social Relations

Fetish / Kink
Monday, 19 October 2026 · 18:30 – 21:30 planlos-leipzig.org, Leipzig, Germany

About the event

The text "National Socialism and Antisemitism" (1986) by the Marxist theorist Moishe Postone shows how antisemitic ideas were closely intertwined with a truncated critique of capitalism. He analyzed the figure of "the Jew" as a projection surface that concretized and simplistically personified abstract political conditions. "The abstract domination of capital, as it accompanied the rapid industrialization of the 20th century in particular, entangled people in a web of dynamic forces that were perceived in the form of 'international Jewry.'", according to Postone. Modern antisemitism is marked as a form of fetish (in the Marxist sense) that prevented the structural perception of capitalist relations.

In the course of the workshop, participants will read the text together and analyze it in a discussion. The aim is to reappropriate critical theory through shared reading and conversation. The subsequent discussion also offers space to reflect on an update of Postone's draft.
