Getting Around

A car is essential. Mikri Mantineia is reached by the coastal road out of Kalamata; local bus service is limited. From here the Mani peninsula opens up to the south — the stone village of Kardamyli (about 25 km) and the beaches around Avia and Almyros are easy day trips — while Kalamata and its airport are a short drive north. Most visitors fly into Kalamata directly or drive down from Athens (roughly 230 km) via the national highway.

Unlike the inland mountain villages of the Peloponnese, Mikri Mantineia and the neighbouring coast toward Kalamata have a good spread of small hotels, apartments and guesthouses, many of them steps from the water. These, along with Thessaloniki, are the nearest places with developed gay scenes; nothing of that kind exists in Messenia itself.
