Malta Pride is one of the Mediterranean's most significant LGBTQ+ celebrations, held in the fortress capital Valletta — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Europe's smallest but most historically packed capitals. The event is particularly meaningful given Malta's dramatic transformation: from deeply conservative Catholic society to one of Europe's most progressive nations on LGBTQ+ rights within a decade.
Malta's LGBTQ+ rights journey is remarkable: in 2012, same-sex civil unions were introduced; by 2017, same-sex marriage was legalized; Malta was ranked first in Europe for LGBTQ+ rights by ILGA-Europe for multiple years. The pride parade through Valletta's dramatic Baroque fortifications and Grand Harbour overlook reflects this extraordinary progress.
