✓ Same-sex relations legal ✗ Same-Sex Marriage ✓ Pride Events ⚖️ North Macedonia decriminalized same-sex sexual activity in 1996, following independence from Yugoslavia. There is no legal recognition of same-sex partnerships, civil unions, or marriages, and the 2019 constitutional changes that accompanied the name change from "Macedonia" to "North Macedonia" did not include any progress on LGBTQ+ partnership rights. Anti-discrimination legislation nominally covers sexual orientation in employment, though enforcement is inconsistent. The country has been an EU candidate since 2005 one of the longest-standing candidacies in Europe and formally opened accession negotiations in 2022. EU accession requirements are beginning to generate legal reform momentum on fundamental rights including LGBTQ+ protections, though progress is slow. Skopje held its first Pride march in 2019, which proceeded peacefully, and subsequent editions have continued. The political environment is complex, with nationalist parties using LGBTQ+ rights as a culture war issue, but civil society and LGBTQ+ organizations have maintained consistent visibility.
