About this place Planty Park (behind Slowacki Theatre)

The stretch of the Planty gardens behind the Juliusz Slowacki Theatre - roughly between ulica Basztowa and ulica Mikolajska, around the old bandstand - is Krakow's long-standing outdoor cruising spot, the classic Polish pikieta. It has held that role for decades and remains active on warm evenings, picking up after dark and running late. The setting is as central as it gets: a tree-lined ring of parkland wrapped around the Old Town, minutes from the Main Square, with the ornate theatre building as the landmark. Activity concentrates on the benches and shadowed paths on the theatre side. A clear-eyed safety note is essential here. The same guides that document the spot also warn consistently about rent boys and rough trade working the area, and occasional gay-bashing incidents have been reported over the years. Keep valuables at home, stay aware of who approaches you, and trust your instincts - if something feels transactional or off, walk away toward the lit streets, which are never more than a minute off. For a safer indoor alternative the city now has three dedicated venues - Ciemnia, Blue XL and Twierdza - which cover the same ground with door staff and darkrooms. The Planty remains the open-air original, best treated as a piece of living queer history that still functions.
