El Confital · north tip of La Isleta

Where: Playa del Confital, La Isleta, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (approx. 28.153, -15.435). Walk north along the Las Canteras promenade past La Puntilla, continue through the fishing quarter of La Isleta and follow the coastal path and wooden boardwalk out to the bay. From the end of the promenade it is roughly 20 to 25 minutes on foot. Bus lines serving La Isleta (Puerto and La Puntilla stops) get you to within a 15-minute walk; there is a small car park at the entrance to the bay.

What it is: the capital's only beach where naturism is officially tolerated, a wild stretch of volcanic rock platforms and small coves facing the open Atlantic, with a famous sunset. By day it belongs to surfers, walkers and a mixed naturist crowd; the clothing-optional area begins where the boardwalk ends. Toward late afternoon and after sunset the far coves and the rocky shelves beyond the main platforms work as a long-standing meeting place for local gay men. Weekends are busier than weekdays and summer is busier than winter, though the climate keeps it active year-round.

Practical rules: there are no kiosks, toilets, showers or shade, so bring water, sunscreen and footwear for the rocks. There is no lighting after dark and the rock is uneven and sometimes wet, so a small torch is genuinely useful. The sea here is open ocean with real waves and no lifeguard; the city also issues occasional water-quality advisories for the bay, so check the flag before swimming. Keep to places where you can see who is approaching, respect the naturists and families who are there for the beach, and take all rubbish back out. El Tritón · Playa de la Laja, GC-1 southern exit

Where: the parking areas and viewpoint by the sculpture Exordio, el Tritón at the southern entrance to the city, just south of Playa de la Laja on the GC-1 (approx. 28.076, -15.413). The bronze Triton was made by the Gran Canaria sculptor Manolo González and installed in 2011; it was later raised onto a grass-and-earth grandstand that doubles as a lookout. Every navigation app knows it, which makes this the easiest cruising spot on the island to find. The city tourism board describes the sculpture and viewpoint.

What it is: a classic Spanish parking-lot scene. The unpatrolled car parks between the beach and the motorway, the underpasses beneath the coastal highway and the paths along the shore draw local men by day and, more so, in the evening and at night. People drive in, park, and read the scene from the car before walking. The ocean is loud enough to give some privacy and the GC-1 is close enough to make a quick exit easy. Guaguas Municipales buses toward Hoya de la Plata stop on the road above the beach, but this is car territory above all.

Practical rules: headlights off is not invisibility; the parking is visible from the motorway and from the promenade. Keep valuables out of sight and doors locked, and avoid the most isolated underpass corners alone after midnight. Discretion toward joggers, fishermen and families using the beach is expected, and the usual Spanish rule applies: nobody is bothered by cruising, everybody is bothered by exhibitionism.

Sauna Portugal · Calle Portugal 27, Guanarteme

What it is: the island's last gay sauna. The Maspalomas bathhouses (Heroes in the Yumbo, Construction in the Cita, the Nilo and Sandia saunas) have all closed, so a men-only sauna with a real local clientele now exists only here. Two levels, bar-cafeteria, Finnish sauna, steam room, showers, private cabins, a labyrinth with glory holes, dark rooms and a sling room; massage can be booked. Towel, slippers and locker are included.

Hours and prices: open daily from 16:00, closing at 23:00 according to most 2025-2026 listings and midnight according to others; call ahead if you are planning a late visit. Entry is around €16, €8 for men under 24 with ID, and Wednesday is customer day at about €12. The busiest window is from opening until about 20:00, when locals drop in on the way back from the beach; the last Saturday of the month has traditionally had a free buffet. Condoms and lube are provided. The crowd is Canarian, loyal and curious about visitors.

When to go

El Confital works in the last two hours before sunset and the first hour after, mostly Friday to Sunday; in summer that means roughly 19:00 to 22:00, in winter 17:00 to 20:00. El Tritón is quiet in the morning, picks up from mid-afternoon with drivers on the way home, and has its main window from around 22:00 to 01:00, later on weekend nights. Sauna Portugal is busiest between 17:00 and 20:00 and on Wednesday customer day. Big calendar moments bring extra people to town: Carnival in February with its televised Drag Gala around Parque Santa Catalina, the city's own Orgullo LGTBI+ organised with Colectivo Gamá at the end of June (the 2026 march was on 27 June from Mesa y López to Santa Catalina; 2027 dates not announced yet), and the Maspalomas Pride and Winter Pride weeks in May and November, when many visitors base themselves in the capital and the sauna fills with people passing through.

Getting there and around at night

Las Canteras, Santa Catalina, Guanarteme and the sauna are all walkable from each other, and the walk to El Confital is a pleasant 20 to 25 minutes along the seafront, though you will want the torch for the return. El Tritón is about 6 km south of Santa Catalina. Guaguas Municipales coastal lines run until around midnight; after that it is a taxi (roughly €10 to €14 from the centre) or your own car. Rental cars are cheap on the island and most people who cruise El Tritón drive. For a southern night out, Global line 30 runs from San Telmo station to Playa del Inglés in about 50 minutes for roughly €6, with the night services (line 5 and line 1) covering the small hours. • PEP within 72 hours of a risk is free through the public system: go to urgencias at Hospital Universitario Insular (Avenida Marítima del Sur) or Hospital Doctor Negrín, ask for profilaxis post-exposición, and bring your EHIC or travel insurance details.
