Gran Canaria has Europe's most developed gay cruising scene. It's open all year, has a big, concentrated gay resort, and gets lots of visitors. That means options here run deeper than most cities can match.
The Maspalomas dunes
The Maspalomas sand dunes are a protected reserve. They're several square kilometers of shifting sand, and they feel surprisingly remote from the resort next door. Gay men have used the dunes for cruising for decades. They're a natural beach, a naturist area, and one of Europe's best-known outdoor cruising spots, all at once.
The gay and naturist beach section sits between the main resort beach and the dunes. From there, head into the dunes for a more secluded environment where cruising is part of the deal. No explicit rules here, just informal norms; regulars generally know which parts are for sunbathing, which are more social, and which are for active cruising.
You can go to the dunes all year. Even in winter. But summer days get so hot that midday and afternoon are uncomfortable. Early morning and evening are best. Since it's a nature reserve, there are no facilities inside the dunes. Use the beach facilities before you go in.
Yumbo Centre indoor venues
Inside and around the Yumbo Centre, saunas and sex clubs give you plenty of indoor options. Some places are specifically sex clubs or darkroom bars, alongside the saunas. Because everything's so concentrated in the Yumbo complex, it's easy to move between a bar and a sex venue in the same evening. These spots are some of Europe's best-equipped, considering the resort's size and year-round tourist numbers.
Year-round activity
Unlike most outdoor cruising destinations in Europe, the Maspalomas dunes are busy all year, thanks to the island's mild climate. The indoor venues also stay open year-round; no seasonal closures. This sets Gran Canaria apart from places that go quiet in winter, making it a reliable choice no matter the month.
Practical notes
