About this place Chueca — Madrid Gay District

Chueca is Madrid's central gay neighbourhood — approximately 15 blocks of the Justicia district bounded by Gran Vía, Fuencarral, Calle Barquillo and Calle Hortaleza. The transformation began in 1983, when a handful of gay-friendly businesses opened after the fall of Franco's Ley de Peligrosidad Social in 1979; by 1990 the neighbourhood held Madrid's highest concentration of queer bars, cafés and shops. Today it is one of Europe's densest gay commercial districts and the anchor of Madrid Orgullo (MADO) — Europe's largest Pride event by attendance (typically 2 million+ over four days each early July). Plaza de Chueca is the neighbourhood's central square. It was pedestrianised in 1997 as part of the Ayuntamiento de Madrid's recognition of Chueca as an LGBTQ+ district — one of the earliest such formal municipal recognitions in Europe. The plaza's three central terrace bars (Café Acuarela, Angel Sierra, and — from 1984 — El Truco) have anchored the neighbourhood's café life for decades. MADO — Madrid Orgullo — runs the first week of July and closes with the Saturday parade that starts at Puerta de Alcalá and finishes at Plaza de España, passing through Chueca's eastern edge. The parade's attendance regularly exceeds 1 million; the six-day surrounding programme takes over the whole neighbourhood with stages, dance parties, and cultural events. Free, open 24/7 as public streets. Chueca metro is at the plaza's northern edge. On any Madrid gay-tourism day this is the anchor; combine with the neighbouring Malasaña district (Movida-era heritage) 10 minutes west or with the Museo del Romanticismo (which programmes a rotating queer-history exhibition) five minutes north.

Really bad experience, avoid it, bartender doesn't know basic english, and some people do not understand the WORD NO i had to be agressive to defend my honor. Very expensive as well. They are shameless.

A bar with four tiny rooms full of old people wasting time and smoking everywhere, and the price is arbitrary; depending on who you are, they charge you one thing or another.

Hi! I went out yesterday and forgot my wallet. Did anyone happen to find it? I'm returning to Madrid on June 5th.
