Itaca Bar is the anchor of gay Seville — the bar that defines the Alfalfa gay scene and around which the rest of the neighbourhood's gay social life organises itself. Located on Calle Amor de Dios in the heart of the old city, Itaca has the character of a bar that has been doing this long enough to be entirely relaxed about it: the welcome is warm, the atmosphere is convivial, and the crowd is a mixture of Sevillano regulars and gay visitors who have been directed here by every guide, review, and word of mouth recommendation in the city. The bar operates on the Seville timetable — which is to say that it does not properly fill until 11pm at the earliest and continues until the early morning — and reflects the specifically Sevillano gay scene, which is smaller and more community-oriented than Madrid or Barcelona but not without its own distinctive character. For visitors to Seville, Itaca is the starting point: the bar from which you learn where else to go, who else to talk to, and what the gay scene in this city actually consists of beyond the standard listings.
